Discussions over Gylfi Sigurdsson’s future are set to be on the agenda when Swansea City return to pre-season duty on Wednesday.
Just under a fortnight after the Iceland international opted out of the club’s pre-season tour of America amidst interest from Everton, he is set to come face to face with the team-mates he thought he had said a final farewell to at their Heathrow hotel.
Head coach Paul Clement must decide whether to re-integrate Sigurdsson into his squad when the Swans recommence their training programme with a session on Wednesday afternoon, or leave him to train away from the first team.
A decision is not thought to have been made, and further talks with the player are expected to take place first.
Swansea face Birmingham in a pre-season friendly on Saturday and there has yet to be any indication as to whether Sigurdsson will be involved.
Reports on Merseyside suggest Everton remain hopeful of getting their man, after seeing a bid of £40million plus nearly £5million in add-ons rejected on Monday night.
If the Toffees are to break their transfer record they will have to meet Swansea’s £50million valuation of the 27-year-old, who has been the club’s player of the season in each of the last two years.
And the Swans consider the ball to be in Everton’s court having made their position clear, with owners Steve Kaplan and Jason Levien releasing a strongly-worded statement in the wake of Sigurdsson’s withdrawal from the squad to travel to the US.
Sigurdsson has three years remaining on his contract, having penned a new contract last summer which made him the best paid player at the Liberty.
He is understood to have indicated a desire to move to Goodison Park, although Clement has stated he does not believe it impossible for Sigurdsson to stay at the Liberty Stadium.
But there is a growing feeling that what has become of one the summer’s main transfer sagas needs to be resolved - one way or the other - in short order.
Everton’s first competitive game of the season takes place on Thursday as they host MFK Ruzomberok in the Europa League, while the start of the Premier League season is just two-and-a-half weeks away.
Swansea have already have a shortlist of targets to replace Sigurdsson should he leave, including Jonathan Viera of Las Palmas and Nacer Chadli of West Brom.
