2024/25 Vitalii Mykolenko

Is it Myko or is it the managers directions for him to be a stay at home defender.

I think there’s a few things at play really.

He arrived when we were in an awful place, and his home country had just gone to war (and he was carrying an injury) so he struggled. We had a manager who didn’t seem to get tactics with a LW (gray) who was very selfish.

Then Dyche came in and set up with FBs staying deep and narrow. And now we have a more expansive manager but have no capable LW so there will be a thought process about not getting caught because there’s no cover.

Yeah, there will be a difference in league quality, but he still had to have the final ball.

Personally I think he is capable of more and I like him as a player. Completely understand the calls for a new LB though. And if we can get better, we should (as we should always want for every position). I also think some of the comments about him being really crap are way over the top. Sign a new LB that’s good enough to start and we then have 2 PL quality LBs, knowing that against the top teams, Myko does a great job against the likes of Salah etc

Good engine , good defender , not slow , not fast , good discipline. Technically poor , can't cross , can't pass , no link up play, poor in the air.

I hope Moyes can get much more from him.
Good description. Decent defender , good attitude but very limited.

We need to replace if we are going to progress.

Like a lot of our players he's just not good enough. Fine as a backup left back to bring on if you're ahead and trying to see a game out, but in the modern game full backs have to be an attacking outlet and ours just aren't.

Mykolenko is a decent enough left back, our problem is we don't have any proper wingers and we lack quality other than Alcaraz in middle. So we need and attacking threat from our wing backs, Mykolenko doesn't offer that. We have a mish mash of players bought by different managers, there was no thought of how they fit in system. Harrison and McNeil consistently go backwards instead of forwards, passing ball back to him.

From what I see as him as a player, it's what I'd consider his best position to be based on those traits.
Fair enough. I don't see it personally, not in the PL at least. He's not great when there's space around him and thats what you get in a back 3. He's not very good in the air either, certainly not commanding, and ideally in a 3 you'd want people comfortable on the ball which is probably his biggest issue. I think he's a left back myself, just one who's fairly limited.
