I'd be happy with 17 million, you can get adequate players for that budget.

Think we will see Jags signed within the next 48 hours, United lost their appeal and I know he was waiting for that to come out before he made a decision.

Anyone remember 2 months ago when I said that Everton had tabled a pre transfer window bid of 3 million for richardson. I wonder if it is now being proven true? ;) ;)

Much as I thought the deal was dead in the water.

I personally rate Smith and think he will be a good player for us. Richardson and Jags will shine for us. Still debating on Koumas but if we get all four for 17 Mill that would be a great bargain in this day and time.(y)

The thing about smith, he's playing in front of a world class midfield in Man Utd and yet he didn't score as much as he should.
Put him in front of our midfield and what will be the likely outcome?

But considering how few games he's played for them as a striker, not sure we know that. I think he'd be a good fit - prefer him to Nugent, actually.

If he's good enough to play upfront fergie would not have drop him to midfield. I don't see nistelrooy playing midfield as he's more than capable of scoring freely if supply is there. Not smith!

I see your point to a degree, and agreed he was not good enough to displace RVN and Rooney from the striker positions. But he was cover for the front 2 at best, and then got that horrific injury. So we've not seen what he can really do at Man U.

Now if we had RVN and Rooney (or strikers at that level) coming out of our ears, I'd agree with you. But as much as I like AJ, and think Vaughan will ultimately be a better striker than Rooney (as I've said elsewhere - perhaps not a better all-round player, but a better striker - but not quote there yet), Smith would be an excellent option up front.

One of my biggest concern is that we don't have someone who can take over arteta and become our "brain" of attack if he's injured.
Someone who can hold the ball, technically good, able to put in thru balls, draw 2 opponent with his close control and dribble hence releasing other team mates to open positions.
And if we have a fit arteta with another flair and creative midfielder we can create much more havoc in opponent's half.
Now is a good opportunity to add someone of such calibre but all players we link with are not capable of doing so.
The addition of smith and nugent might be good to a certain extent but they are still too similar to what we have in AJ and vaughan. I'll be happy if we can get someone similar to zola, who can play up front or drop deep or midfield and hold the ball well.

Cahill is good in his own way, more towards the benefiter of end product than creator of benefits.
I've rarely or never seen him do step over, nutmeg or stuff that draws you to the edge of the seats, the flair of dribbling, getting past players or whatever you may wish to call it. He's better at scoring by running from deep.
Most of the football we played without arteta in the side has been awful.
