1950s relegation

I knew Harry Potts as a kid growing up in Pensby as I knew his daughter through shared sporting hobbies. He had an injury plagued time with us but was in both the relegation and promotion squads. He was Burnley first, Everton second in his allegiance but had a season ticket to watch us before moving back to Burnley around the time I went to Uni mid 80s and he then watched them regularly. He was a proper gentleman and always said our fans were terrifically loyal during the rough years.

My dad went twice and didn’t see a game! First one called off by fog, then locked out of the game to clinch promotion!!!

FWIW he said relegation was terrible -a disgrace- but he just thought they would bounce back. Also said it was sort of worth it to come back up as RS went down and he got to loads of new grounds in Div 2.
But in fairness he was saying this around 1970 when we were boss again which I think coloured his comments a bit.
Yes the first game should have been played in January that year if I’m not mistake, the second one, I don’t know how many Everton fans travelled to watch that game, it was pay at the gate first come first served, I got in early but finished upon just behind the goal near the touch line with hundreds of other young kids, we scored all four goals at the other end before half time, two more bleedin’ goals and we would have gone up as Champions, I think Oldham turned it into a kicking match after the interval, but it never spoiled the night with the pitch absolutely chock a block at the finish saluting the team, and on the way Oldham train station it was singing all the way into the station and all the way home on the train with Exchange Street station alive with Blues cheering their heads off and no one wanting to go home.

They reckon the attendance was almost double the published number ..?

The Goodsy Park atmosphere was electric with a fierce toffees crowd getting the chaps from minute 1. Ownership wasn’t a problem as fans didn’t have Excel and nor did the fans care they were just there for the spectacle. Admission was one and six.

Sorry about @Joey66 he has the dementia.
Correct Chico about the admission fee except if you wore army, navy or air force uniforms it was three pence cheaper one and three, made a difference in those days, I paid nine pence to go into the Boys Pen, never ever saw you know who in there, then got out at three quarter time and sneaked into The Upper Bullens Road Stand and behaved like a Toff ( gentleman) not a Toffee!!

So sorry to hear about Joey, loved all his photo’s and his points of view, Joey you’re a great Bluenose mate, even if I’ve never met you, and we’ll thought of on here, thinking of you Joey very best wishes, can you put a photo up of the Everton fan offering Cassius Clay out in Hyde Park just before the 1966 FA cup final. I believe Cassius said “ I ain’t fightin’ no Bluenose you are my mate, now if there’s any Reds- - - - present step forward and I’ll put your teeth through the back of your neck!! That’s only what I heard by the way!!

I was born in 1941 and can tell you kids the fans were much better in our last relegation
We certainly were although I was rejected three times applying to be an alter boy at my parish church!!
Christ I forgot to mention Juliussen, yep centre forward and my dad reckons the worst of lot 😂Harry Potts another who went on to manage Burnley, tar all over the gaff at Oldham that night you are quite correct mate!!!
I think the fans covered the tar on the gate with loads of newspapers and plenty still got in climbing over it!
