They gross - is that then before or after taxes?

Plus if it's two people then their tax burden is a ALOT less that one person earning 85K.

Also just because people don't show signs doesn't mean that they don't. I know people who live in huge houses and only heat and live in one room. They want the appearance of being well off without actually being well off.

Err, if you don't know the difference between Gross and Net ... :)

Mostly agree about the tax burden, but trust me, people in that area, earning that sort of money are not struggling.

Younger people earning that sort of cash won't be living in such a big house and their disposable income will be less because more of their earnings will be going towards mortages, but the difference between wondering whether to buy that £6 bottle of red rather than the one at a tenner, as opposed to worrying about putting food on the table and heating your gaff is very real.

I was approximating. I don't earn 80K a year :)
fair enough, suppose if you lob in NI then that may be another 4k

but you mentioned the example paying 10k pension contributions, yet fail to mention he could get tax relief on that, the figures in your example don't stack up really

and besides, at the end of the day, it's 80k and anyone could make that work

You can't really slap a 20% tax on property sales like that mate. The current tax on a property sale of a million is about 4.5%. If you made it 20% you're likely to skew the market so much that you'd bring house sales at that level to pretty much a grinding halt, which would filter down the property ladder. You'd have to change the system much more gradually not to break it.
Nothing will be done about property. Too many people do too well from it and the banks earn a fortune from it. It's the new landed gentry.

In the past people had to work their land because they didn't own their own and they then taxed them everything they could just allowing them enough to survive.

Now they force us to pay that money in mortgages and rent.

If you really want something done that's what should be tackled. Forget all the left and right nonsense. That's the real scandal.

pensions and schools however I also left out heating, holidays and plenty of other things.

It was back of napkin maths just to try and show people where the money goes and more importantly what's left at the end.

Yes people could live in a cheaper house, drive a cheaper car or not send their kids to private schools or university.

But then they would be no better off than the families that get their house and benifits from the state so what would be the point.

don't take it personal chum, I owned tubey in the blur v oasis thread too

he hates people who do sponsored runs
I'm not keen on them either.

You know someone, whose name you can barely remember, wants sponsoring when they come up to you with a big smile on their face and ask how you are.

Just koff you gits. If you're that worried about the charity sell something and give 'em the proceeds

I'll TAKE 80k seeing as youre offering.... for the pair

This. This. And This. Fed up of hearing it when it's blatantly obvious that we're not. This is what I was trying to get out of @peteblue earlier when I was asking if the Tories genuinely believe it. I have a feeling that some actually do. There are people on these boards who've even questioned the legitimacy of stats produced on poverty and wealth inequality, suggesting that it's all left wing propaganda.
I guess some people are just detached from the real world.
I think we're all in this together - up to a point.

But yea coming from the mouths of Cameron and Osbourne it's a bit hard to take.

However what university and background did Miliband come from - isn't he also being just as hypocritical?

I think it's more the vast majority excluding the very well off or in it together. Ironically what we're in was mostly caused by the ones that aren't.

Chuggers. Can't live with them, can't .... erm can't live with them.

Something is being done about property where I live, but we're doing it ourselves. The community, is doing it. And in doing it we genuinely hope to be able to stabilise house prices (or even bring them down). Buying property here to then put on the rental market is slowly looking less and less attractive and rents have already come down. By providing properties for young professionals we're managing to help other demographics too.

Tories want to mess it up for us though.
