Why would you be bricking it? Could it be due to - gasp - the extra cost?

All the more reason to save up first, surely?
Nope. It's due to the fact that as a bloke you can hardly cope with one at a time.

It should probably be noted that kids are actually quite cheap to run for the 1st couple of years. You won't even miss a 2nd wage because you'll have no time to spend it on anything anyway.

do what you feel is right for you and your missus, you are always skint when the kids come along so a nice few bob put away is a good thing,
at those rates of pay you will struggle with childcare costs unless your families can muck in

so if she got married they would both be rich?
well thinking about it you might have a point my ex walked away with a free house and debt free and a nice monthly income , while i picked up the bill and the kids most nights:D
Exactly the state isn't paying in that instance. Everyone's a winner.

Well except for you.

Although being serious - That sucks. That's why we need to change marriage law and force people into making contracts before.

My friends who have them are always tired. If you want more than 1 don't wait too long. You just won't have the energy.

The milkman?........

According to the article posted a couple pages back by @Jib in lad , the first five years cost just over £70k in total. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/11360819/Average-cost-of-raising-a-child-in-UK-230000.html

Your points aren't making much sense to me mate. I would never, ever consider taking on a responsibility as profound as raising a child without planning how to financially support the whole thing first. And how could we as a couple possibly NOT miss her income when faced with the costs listed in that article?

How can the time "be right" if the finances are not in place? Isn't that a recipe for struggling for the next 20 years? "Feeling like something is missing" is a reason to get a dog, not to have a child at the state's expense IMHO. Absolutely not the way I would ever make that decision - I would regard myself as behaving recklessly and irresponsibly.

I'm in a similar boat to you tree.

Me and the girlfriend are just in the process of buying a our first house after eventually getting a deposit together... no rich parents to slip us a few grand to help us out.

The prospect of children seems a million years away, probably a direct result of being responsible and trying to do the right things financially.

I'll be the old Dad at the school gates!

you know what mate till you go through it you wouldn't believe how screwed against the male, cost me everything house possessions kids, despite being the innocent party, schools even backing me , didn't make a diffrence, she was a mother that trumped being a dad, needs looking into

That is a very interesting point. Currently born out by statistics, but is it right?

Surely all children are born equal regardless of their parent's relative wealth?

So how about creating a society that rewards talent and effort regardless of background?
Tell that to the front benches of both Labour and the Conservatives
