2015 post UK election discussion

Perhaps, but Major's lasted 5 years.

Struggling to see how this one won't, sadly.

Labour needs to get it's act together.

He had a slightly bigger majority though and still had to get MPs out of hospital beds and into parliament to survive a vote of confidence.

But yes I may be clutching at straws because the DUP are likely to support him if he needs them. We'll see. It may be a bumpy ride.

THE SCOTTISH AFFAIRS COMMITTEE is CROSS PARTY.

Its irrelevant what party are in government. As he'll still get summoned.

Also the Conservatives will unlikely allow someone to cheat the system with zero hour contracts too. As it means the UK government isn't getting the tax revenue or national insurance it is otherwise due.

That hasn't stopped other large scale tax avoiders, has it?

But pump prices fell for about a week, then went up again.

They think we're thick.

It was due to the UK election and the seizure in the straits of Hormuz of the freighter by Iran last week. Plus whats happening with Saudi in Yemen.

Generally prices will stay below $100 for two years at least.

The pump price will show shocks and then slowly come back down again.

'elasticity in the pump price'

Actually, I'd prefer private enterprise to lead the way, starting with small business and moving up. A large state is a money sink - an effective state is an asset.
I actually don't disagree with that either. The problem is it normally doesn't work like that. People get into power and line their own pockets. At least in the free market inefficient businesses go under to be replaced with more efficient ones.

I think they'll last three. Not for the reasons you've said - but because the knives will be out for Cameron as he isn't standing for the third term - Johnson and May will be at his throat, and all their allies on the backbenches.

Early 2018 at the latest, as if it were me I'd be looking to get rid quick for two reasons - first, they have a commanding grip on the electoral landscape and don't want to allow time for the SNP voters to realise the error they made, seats to swing back to Labour and the "Scottish threat" being nullified to translate to Labour votes in England. And secondly, they won't want to come leader after five years of horrific austerity measures, if the chance is there to get in after just a few years.

Possibly. Or Cameron might resign early and let his successor take over in mid-term. A likely scenario tbh.

The thing is, that's simply not true. They very much did appeal to the centre ground if polling about the most important issues is to be believed - and yet they didn't get in. Sadly, the Right owns so much of the mass media these days (in particular Sky News, The Sun, The Times, The Telegraph and the Daily Mail) that appealing to the centre ground isn't enough. You can have pretty popular policies and yet still be characterised as "Loony Left."
The Guardian and Mirror are both Left. Even the BBC is more left than right.

I'm glad you've climbed down on your nonsense statements that Mike Ashley won't be getting a summons.

Back to reality for you.

I know Ashley will be summoned. That doesn't mean anything of value will happen. His business will still employ large amounts of low paid immigrants on dodgy contracts afterwards.

Nope. It will be the start of a crack down on those like Ashley excessively using inappropriate contracts for full time employees when they are meant for temporary employees.

Just out of curiosity - Why do you think they made a mistake?

The Guardian and Mirror are both Left. Even the BBC is more left than right.

Can I ask you a question - are you actually affiliated to the Conservative Party?

Grauniad - readership of maybe 400,000. BBC - litered with ex-Tory Party members. Seriously. Litered.

You are clearly more optimistic than I am. I hope you are right. Going back to my last point which you chose not to respond to; why would the conservatives make it their prerogative to crack down on tax avoidance, as you suggested, when their party members are involved in such affairs?

The Americans are far more generous than the Brits when it comes to philanthropy because of the tax breaks involved. They give a lot to the arts and culture in particular.
Exactly - That's their system. It's less statist and more individual and the idea is that slack gets taken up by charity.

The problem is that progressive parties don't want it to be charity but rather and entitlement and that can lead to abuse and costs more. No system is really perfect in practice. e.g. Their health care is far better if you have a decent job and can pay insurance but without it's awful.
