2017/18 Europa League group

Atalanta and Lyon is a tough group on reflection.

Unforgivable we didn't beat Limassol at home though.
A game that really sticks in the memory that. We'd needlessly struggled for most of that game, then they had a man sent off and we went 2-1 up, literally only needed to see out until the end of the game and they score a soft late equaliser from a high ball into the box..

Thankfully I was on holiday during that game, 90 mins of utter dirge avoided

Looking back at our Europa League campaign back in 2017/18 really does show what could have been *if* we got our recruitment right.

Both Atalanta and Lyon are now in the CL quarter-finals. We’re finishing bottom half of the table, yet spent ridiculous money since then.

If only someone had a time-machine with all the answers to who we should’ve signed etc.

So I put it to you GOT. Who should we have signed? Who would’ve taken us on the upwards trajectory that our two Europa League rivals have taken?

Lyon just successfully finished outside of the European places in Ligue 1, which considering there is only one decent team in Ligue 1, isn’t that good. They beat Juve, who absolutely detested Sarri and that’s a great achievement, but lets

Atalanta is just a huge success story, and full credit to them.

We’re absolutely disgraceful, so let’s forget us too

That Atalanta away game is forever scarred in my memory. That was the turning point when I realised we were a complete basket case.

I was on my way home from Portugal when that game was being played. Every time I checked the score on my phone we'd conceded.

That experience was just a huge embarassment from start to finish.

I'd love to get back into Europe just to have the chance to overturn that alone.

I am old enough to remember Rotterdam in '85 but European football since then for us has been yes, an embarrassment on the whole. Bucharest another example.

When losing a last 16 EL tie at home on pens to Fiorentina is held up as some sort of benchmark to be nostalgic about, it just shows how absolutely deprived we have been.

Was sat in a bar in Caleta De Fuste watching the drubbing by Atalanta.

We wandered into some bar called "Legends" later on and there was a ropey hack ex-pat comedian on who was arguably even worse than Everton that night.
