2024/25 Relegation Battle (Without Everton!)

Last xmas

We had 18 points from 17 games (Not including deduction) and were 15th, 9 points above Luton at this stage (Luton 3rd bottom had game in hand)

Without the deduction we would have had 26 points from 17 games and would be 10th at this stage, after winning 8 games

Today

we have 17 points from 17 games, in 15th place and are 3points above 3rd bottom

I was just doing this comparison myself. I suppose the points deduction makes it easy to forget how many points we'd earned this point last season but I didn't realise how far behind we are compared to then.

A 9 point regression is not good.

It's not good and why the slow start to the season is so annoying.

I think last year we had that run of wins post deduction around Christmas, then went on the 16 game streak without a win from January.

Ultimately, we need a few wins pronto.

The first 4 games of the season plus the 3 in November are the reason why we're currently too close to the relegation zone for comfort.

To have taken only 1 point from the Bournemouth, Villa, Southampton and Brentford games given the context (2 goals up, Brentford down to 10 men, Southampton being sh1te) is a real shocker of a return.

It goes without saying wins help, but the facts you and @Ring master have stated above from last year show that we just need not to have a long negative run like last year. If we picked up 3 wins within that 16 game period then we wouldn't have needed the streaky block of wins either side. It will be closer this term as the teams down there have more points but the panic should not set in unless we have a horrific run. Even if we did we know Dyche would be gone if it's 5 bottom of the league teams we can't win against, so that's at least comforting.

We've come out of a period where most of us expected to dip our toes back in the drop zone and we're still 3 points above with a game in hand. Let's take that as positive and see if we can use that as a springboard against sides we should be looking to beat.

It's essentially 4 points when you compare our GD (-7) to Leicester's (-18), and there's absolutely no way that gets overhauled.

I'd also imagine the other sides at the bottom of the table will have been looking at our respective December fixtures and been targeting getting their noses ahead of us in the table.

Don't get me wrong, we absolutely should not be in the relegation conversation, but we're still in the best position of the bottom 6 mini league.

Hopefully improving on that 16 winless streak this season will balance it out compared to last season

Luton actually won a few games around this time last year, can remember them hammering Brighton 4-0 and thinking they'd get past 30 points no problem. Think they only picked up another six points after that game.

What helped around that time was partly winning the first points deduction appeal and getting four points returned.

Currently to me this feels a 38/39 point season which barring a disaster will be good enough to stay up but it will still be very tight to 18th for a couple more months imo.

Edit: As said above the snail pace starts kill any chance of going for top half imo but that's what Dyche seems to like to do so team peaks more in November/December to pick up crucial wins and draws.

Brighton end of Jan, and was Luton's last win till a final league win in April. But they did beat Newcastle 1-0 and Sheff Utd 3-2 in a few days at xmas

if we can start turning draws to wins we’d be ok

that’s the problem
This is what Dyche does, turns defeats in to draws and also wins in to draws, he is a point a game manager. This is what everyone has been expecting and what we will continue to be the case.

Players change, I think 14 players have arrived since Dyche took over, but Dyche and his stats do not change which suggests even with better players we will be on the 1 point per game ratio...

Having the points on the board always helps, we also have that game in hand but not sure what that is worth...

Only Ipswich and Southampton have less wins than Everton with Palace and Leicester on the same number of wins. Amazingly Wolves now have more wins and are on the upward trajectory. If Dyche has the same 1 win in 15 crash as last season we will be going head to head with Leicester for that last place and maybe even Ipswich if they can get a few wins on the board.

We aren`t out of it yet but we if we want to get clear we need wins, draws aren`t going to take us far away from this fight, unfortunately Dyche isn`t great at getting wins.... 26 from 81 in all comps, 21 from 72 in the PL.

The club has a fresh takeover we can all be optimistic about and I think that fresh start should also be reflected in the management and coaching of the football side and set us on a course for bringing back a winning Everton side and ridding this mentality that has been allowed to fester that being heroic losers is acceptable, how many times are our supporters satisfied because we "had a go".

Time to bring back some standards.......

Back to back wins for Wolves suddenly makes things look rosier for them, but how long does it last? Confidence will still be fragile after their shocking start to the season and it will only take a couple of poor results for them to drop back into the bottom 3 and it's panic stations again. Plus the fact they will most likely be without Cunha for a handful of games once the PL get off their arses and sort out his punishment. They really gave themselves *a lot* to do to stay up this season.

Last season was *very* streaky... we gained something like 80% of our total points in 2x 2 month windows with not a lot else in between. I really can't see us going 14 games without a win this season, just as I can't see us winning 3 or 4 back to back, both if which we did last season.

You're right though, wins make all the difference. Draws are great at keeping the points ticking over and keeping your head there or thereabouts above water, but a win could be the difference between being 2 points clear of the relegation zone with 18th breathing down your neck, and being 5 points clear with a superior goal difference and all of a sudden you need a 2 game swing to go against us for us to drop back into it again with a couple of other teams below you in 16th and 17th for good measure.

Throw in Leicester, Newcastle and Fulham then it’s really poor. 4 points from 21 from that set of games means we need some wins quickly to just get us some distance.
