40 years ago today

Remember that night so vividly. The huge queues to get in the street end that seemed to snake down the street end and into goodison road. Many players, fans have spoken about the atmosphere that night, but words can’t do it justice. They were a top team (arguably the two best teams in Europe at the time) and it was an injustice they scored in the first half against the run of play. The second half performance is up there with the best performances I’ve witnessed as a fan. All our top players stood up to be counted, Sharp and Gray physically bullied their defenders into submission. Reid and Bracewell harassed and nullified their midfield as an attacking threat, while Sheedy and Steven added the guile and skill. What a night, what a time to be an evertonian.

Ron Atkinson said similar after the cup final win over us in 85. We’ve not just beaten the best team in England, but the best team in Europe!

If I remember rightly Everton increased admission prices for this game. I got my older brother and future father in law tkts in the Upper Bullens a few days in advance. I think they were £6 each. It was pay on the gate for the terraces (£3 for the Gwladys and Park end). I went with a gang of mates. We literally only just about made it into the Gwladys St (lower). For some strange reason we decided to stand behind the goal, half way up the lower section for a change. We normally always stood on the shelf, just under the stand. Everywhere was already packed by the time we got in, so maybe that's what prompted are break from tradition. At first, it reminded me a bit of that night only a few years earlier against Southampton in an FA cup replay. It was absolute pandemonium outside then also, and we only just about got in on that occasion too. Similarly the atmosphere was electric from the start, but this had that bit extra, that really set it apart. We all knew we were watching the best team in the land and all sides of the ground was bouncing in complete unison to prove that we were the best in Europe.... the proverbial bearpit was baying for blood! Once we got the taste.... it went right through the roof!

Only after the match did I find out that my future father in law didn't make it to the game due to last minute work commitments. My brother said he was sitting next to the only empty seat in the house. For years afterwards I probably had the only unused ticket of that night.... unfortunately, since lost. I do still have my Amberline coach ticket to Rotterdam though. £69 including match ticket.

My Dad was in the Paddock that night and he said that he does not think his feet touched the ground during the second half.
He said he had never experienced anything like that game before or since and his first game was in 1938!!!
Paddock with my Dad, Mum in Lower Bullens. Remember it like it was yesterday. Jumping round knowing I was going to Rotterdam. Amazing night, great atmosphere.

Just seemed to me anyhow to have the feel of a totally different occasion from the second I got in the ground/main stand that night, huge noise from all four corners of the ground, the old park end, usually mainly sparsely populated with away fans that season, chocker with Blues, the wall of noise only punctuated when Bayern scored to go ahead, the pounding we gave them in the second half kicking in to the Gwladdy, the waves of emotion cascading down from the stands and onto the pitch, the brutality of the actual game, the unbridled joy when Tricky Trev slotted the third to rubber stamp our passage to the final, the scenes at the end, what a night, what an Everton/Goodison night👍💙💙💙
