Whst I would say is I think he’ll be pragmatic and not adhere to one particular system, but we’d need to be signing wingers if we want to stick with 442. You could argue for 3-5-2 but we’d need about 5 decent CB for that.

Yeah i can't really see us signing a CAM either to be honest. But maybe it would click for Iwobi there? Won't hold my breath like.

Anyway, Carlo has said many times that he's flexible with his formations, if we do play a diamond it won't be every game

I think he’ll continue to play Gylfi in a number 10 role at times. His form last season was atrocious but if you were being very kind you could say he played a large part of the season out of position. That being said he was useless under Silva last season too.

Football is changing all the time.
At present full backs are the new wingers(Liverpool in particular create most of their chances through their full backs).
When we played Liverpool after the restart CA played Iwobi and Gordon very wide and very deep.
I think CA will build his team on a solid defence and a hard working midfield.
I don't think we will score lots of goals, but I think we will concede far less than before.

Do I think he is trying to sign players EXACTLY like for like to that team. No.

More importantly, do I think he’ll stick to one formation? Absolutely not.

But those two players allow for a 3 man midfield.

Do I think he wants a midfield 3 with a combination of industry and bite and mobility around a player that has a bit of guile? Yes.

Do I think that midfield 3 is quite narrow and that he’ll get width from the full backs? Yes.

I think from the players he’s signing, right now this season, he wants options beyond just 442 and I see that 3 of those players working together in a broadly similar way those 3 did.

I do not think we’ll be as narrow up front and I think at times we’ll play 442 or 352 rather than a 442 diamond/narrow 433.

He’s a pragmatic manager. Look at the players we have and the players he’s looking to sign. He’s giving us options and I can see that a 3 man midfield with those 3 and Gomes playing deep is going to be one of those times.

I just looked at the formation + the types of players and couldnt see any similarities.

Lets take your points one by one:

1: 3 in midfield for me would be DM: Gbamin CM: Doucoure CM: Allan i dont know if thats even possible with Gbamins injuries. If he was fine then youve got Gbamin obviously as the anchor with Allan and Doucoure pressing in front. Going forward both Allan and Doucoure are ball carriers and Doucoure can add goals.

Very solid stable and tough to beat.

I think youre looking at Gomes instead of Gbamin. For me, Gomes just doesnt cut it and has 5 poor games for 1 brilliant one. Hes a liability deep and doesnt have the nous in an attacking role...just cant see it at all.

2 in midfield then its Doucoure/Allan/Gbamin rotating which is also very solid for a 2 man midfield

2: Width from the full backs; Currently we only have Digne who could be up/down. Possibly Nkounkou so we would need 2 new right backs

3: We cant play 352 unless we have at least another RB + CB.

4: As in (1) i cant see how Gomes is effective deep. Every game weve played him deep hes looked poor to me.

I don’t see how you can possible rate Gbamin ahead of Gomes. That’s ludicrous. He’s played a game and a half.

Gomes with the right players around him will be great. He’s got a great passing range and I see him as someone who can keep the ball moving which we haven’t really had since Barry.

Stick proper legs around him and he’ll be fine.

I know we don’t currently have a RB but the whole premise of the post was *based on the players he’s looking at* (florenzi and arias included). And we are obviously also looking at a CB.

you’ve kinda ignored main parts of my post there which was entirely hypothetical and based on the players we’ve been linked to (which is basically Allan Doucouré florenzi/Arias and Gabriel).

Your main relevant point is that you don’t rate Gomes.

I do, especially with the right players around him.

Key is the wide players mate - Liverpool dont have much creativity in the middle yet have just won the title.

We need to get rid of Bernard, drop Walcott to the bench and bring in 2x creative wide players who can cause teams problems.

Zaha & Bailey only ones linked but I would take both - the former will win us many penalties and the latter has potential to be a top player who can also whip in a good ball.

Shame we cant get Grealish - would be great drifting in from the left hand side.

in 155 top division league games for Valencia, Barca and us Andre Gomes has 10 goals and 9 assists, roughly 2 of each per equivalent season. Anyone expecting him to transform into an assist machine is deluding themselves. An additional 62 European games & cup ties yields 2 goals and 6 assists just to drive the point home. He started roughly 155 of those games with about 60 sub appearances so it isn't a matter of limited time but of limited impact. He's an elegant 'water carrier' not a playmaker.
