2023/24 Abdoulaye Doucoure

I'm not his biggest fan and I'd like to see us play better technical players.

However it's difficult to think of a player who would be as effective in that position in a Dyche side that we could pick up on a free .
I doubt dyche wound go for a technical player in that position if he had 30mil. He will play doucoure, McNeil. Harrison behind the striker until he’s out of a job. Unfortunately we want lay a glove on the top 10 with them 3

Hope he is on 120k a week - though i doubt it, we wouldn't be a PL over the last two seasons without him and thats worth 100s of millions to the club.

No problem lads getting well paid if they are influencing, fair play to him.
The last 2 seasons? He was poor the season before. And effected games last year by scoring goals as dyche played him high up the pitch, he offers very little else. And there were loads of players he helped us stay up. Pickford doesn’t save the Maddison pen v Leicester and its 3-1 and we’re as good as down

Wouldn't agree personally mate, we arent staying up either year without him, it rings true comparatively to results when hes in the team and not.

….Doucoure offers lots when the opposition have possession. He gets behind the ball from his forward position and has terrific powers of recovery. He’ll get beyond our striker, he’ll press opposition in top third and next thing he’s blocking shots or making tackles around our own box.

He mightn’t be pleasing on the eye and he’s erratic in possession but to say he ‘offers little’ is clearly not true.

He is a good player off the ball. A limited one on it. Given the amount of turnover there will be during the summer due to probable retirements (Coleman,Young), loans ending (Danjuma, Harrison), contracts ending (Keane, Gomes, Dele) and our best talent being targeted (Onana, Branthwaite) extending Douc an extra year is a no brainer.

Even if he’s having a stinker, he can still have a positive impact just through this constant running and his ability to get forward and occupy the defence.

No issue at all extending his stay with us, without falling into the trap of giving him a 3/4 year extension which we might have done in the not too distant past.

I’m not thrilled about this. I know he’s great when we’re against teams who control the ball, but he’s already IMO paid too much for us to run like a self-sustaining/growing brand. I understand the rationale behind it, but now will DCL/McNeil/Tarkowski etc want parity when his deal comes around for renewal? I really hope this is with the intention to flog him in the summer (if we have no transfer ban).

That being said, if there isn’t someone out there that can play the same role as him (run around all day & score when he doesn’t have time to think about what he’s doing, but have bad tracking at corners/free kicks, inability to pass incisively etc) then it’s better to protect what you’ve got… I guess.

We don’t know what he is being paid under the new contract. Reports of him being the highest earner at the club now are very likely click bait. He’s more likely to be on reduced terms but receiving a signing on fee.

Do you ever think over the full season the reason we're having to score goals late in the season to fight off relegation is because we're paying players 100k a week who cant string two passes together the rest of it.
Doucoure had played the grand sum of 240mins under Lampard last season by the time Dyche arrived, from then to the end of the season whe was our most effective player.
Can say that he can't put two passes together and he's on £100k a week, but your argument falls down if you're blaming him for being one of the reasons we were in a relegation fight. He was key to us staying up last year, and we'll worth whatever salary he was paid for it, and is continuing the same form and level of effectiveness for Dyche this season.

His effectiveness is far greater than his ability. Fans think they want ability, managers want effectiveness.

Probably be a few windows before we can afford someone as effective as him, even if he does look confused and ungainly sometimes. Sensible decision I guess, rather than forking out tens of millions we haven’t got for a similar player and paying them the same salary he is on. If mistakes were made, they were in the past. This is ok.

….a Bosman. No transfer fee for the club he joins so the player asks for a huge signing fee, plus he’d probably insist on at at least 2 year contract.
Not much of a free transfer if it costs a fortune. I think any signing-on fees are greatly exaggerated by fans compared to what they actually are, especially for the likes of Doucoure. Any idea what fee we paid to Bernard? If it wasn't obvious in the annual accounts it must not have been much.

Considering how many players sign a contract extensions and then are sold the next season they can't all just be willing to give up a fortune.
