2023/24 Abdoulaye Doucoure

….i expect there’d be plenty of offers on his table next summer.

This is the way the game is now. To think he’d sign a deal for less money when he can move on a Bosman is not how it works. The power is with players.

At a certain level and a certain wage.
I Think his career has peaked at Everton. He should realise that himself. I think he does.

If he's on that sort of money its no surprise at all Everton are in the mess they are.
I think one of the reasons we have been in such a mess is that we have had lots of players sitting on the bench on high wages. Players who didn't give their all on the pitch for us. While Doucoure may have a little less talent than some of those, and all of us know who they are, he certainly leaves everything out there when he plays.

im pretty sure with the right due diligence we could get players to give their all on a fraction of the money. vastly over paying players without the basic quality has been the main issue. I dont know how accurate the figures are but we've been shelling out transfer fees and top 5 salaries for the past 6 or 7 years on players who are bottom half of the table quality.
Thats why we're in the sh!t.

How long is the extension for? I guess we can’t let everybody leave at the end of the season and he did score some crucial goals last year. Don’t begrudge him this. How much in wages is sat on the bench week in week out…

…..i suspect he’s enjoying the best of his career here, I genuinely believe that. i’d be sure he’d make more monies seeing his contract out but he’d have welcomed the deal at Everton as long as it was financially attractive. That’s it really. Make more money elsewhere or stay where you’re happy with a nice bunce to show for it.

The club has increased his salary. Doucoure held all the aces but Dyche will be chuffed he’s signed.

We took the option last season to keep him until next summer, this new deal is being described as 2 years so it sounds like he’s had a pay bump for the rest of this season and the ‘extension’ is until June 2025.

I think you're vastly over rating his ability and what he could get elsewhere. He's a pretty bog standard player and shouldnt be on anywhere near what he's (reportedly) picking up here.
Nobody would have been falling over themselves for him. Lets not kid ourselves.

So let's say he's currently on £120k a week, 6 months to run on his contract = £3m give or take.
We extend for an extra year and bump weekly to £140k (guess but cant see us going higher), he now has 18 months at £140k = £11m (additional cost to the club £8m for one season)
Now say we were to try and replace next summer instead of extending, and say we hit lucky and bring in 1st team starter for £15m over 5 years on £80k (as we're trying to get wage bill down), this would cost us just under £8m and would give us hopefully an appreciating asset rather than having Doucs worth zero come summer 25.
That would be what Red Kev would be thinking in normal times... but we're completely skinto and are likely facing a transfer ban so we need to make do.

Half everything there and we wouldnt be in the mess we are. He should be going from 50k max to maybe 60k. As should have all those before him. We're giving out Champions league level salaries while fighting relegation battles.

Can you see the madness.
