Aces cracked.

Playing in a 1/3 game tonight. Started with $200. In the space of 10 minutes, was up to $300. Table started getting a bit crazy. Raise, reraise, etc.... One guy was a guaranteed raiser.

Decided to bide my time and wait for something to trap with.

Woke up with AA and was second to act. Took a risk and limped in for $3. Got a bit nervous as four other callers for $3. Got to the big blind (the guy who was a guaranteed raiser) and he popped it $25. Two folded in front of me.

I re-pop it to $100. Everyone folds and he calls pretty quickly (he's an action junkie).

Flop comes K, Q, 3 rainbow (no flush draw on the board). He shoves "All-In" and I insta-call him.

He turns over Kc 10c. I was an 83% favorite preflop and an 80% favorite post flop.

Hits his 10 on the turn.

I need an A, Q, or 3 on the river.

Miss.

Stacked me.

Drove home absolutely steaming but you win some, you lose some. Tired of hands not holding up though and worse, tired of donkey calls getting paid off.

Ah well, that's poker. Those of you that play know my pain right now. It'll be ok tomorrow.
I'm unsure, should I like this post or not (did you win)

That's why you never limp in with aces. It's a must-raise situation, especially in early position. That usually diminishes the pot, but then again it's always better to win a smaller pot than lose a bigger one. I hate donkeys as much as the next player, but TBF he did go in with two pretty high suited cards and flopped top pair with a decent kicker. He might have thought you were going in with AK or AQ. What makes me want to commit GBH is when I go in with aces or kings and get outflopped by someone holding 9-4 offsuit or some other such crap. There's no strategy in that, it's basically a roll of the dice.

Say anything to him? I'm make him feel like a child for being nothing but lucky.

Nah. I think he's already got the loose cannon reputation and I didn't want to look like a sore loser. Some player just play fast and loose. Much more variance to their games than mine but that's the way it goes.

Tbf it's only real hardcore poker players that can manage to play whilst there is a boxing bout actually happening in the ring at the same time. Proper dedication.

TX, it's a bad beat, but, have you ever landed some massive luck and bust someone else out before? For all the percentages and likelihoods sometimes it boils down to gut feeling and going down in a blaze of glory if need be.
Turn and River runner runner is one I'll never forget.

Absolutely. I've had my share of bad beats (where I was massively behind after the flop only to run them down) where I've won, but based on my play (tight, conservative) I tend to run into bad beats more than your average player just due to my starting hand requirements and position.

I knew I was ahead after he went all in but when he hit his 10, I just felt sick.

Poker - a game of skill or chance?

Both. The pros will tell you it's more skill than luck but you need a lot of luck to help you too. If you've played your hand properly, your opponent can still "suck out" on you in the end. All the skill in the world can't help you swerve that.

losing a 4:1 favourite is not exactly a rare occurence in poker.
It's the mugs who occasionally make a hand that keep the good players in business.
Just keep making the right plays, innit.

Well said Evil. The fish..."where do they keep coming from?" Yet they're at tables all over the land, still playing "improperly" but you're spot on that they'll occasionally hit a big hand against you. Just seems to happen quite a bit these days.

In my mind, I read this in the style of Kenneth Williams

You're right.

I made this particular play due to the play at the table. Had I been in middle position or later, I probably would have raised out of the gate. But a guy two positions to my left and the big blind had been raising/re-raising since I had sat down so I was hoping just to scoop the blinds plus any raises or at worst, have heads up action, which I got.

It all worked out just right...

...except the flop and turn of course......
