Ademola Lookman

Whenever I've seen him play, he's looked decent and seems to have that spark of magic in him. But this is now the third manager that hasn't given him game time. My worry is that we sell him, he gets a chance elsewhere and look the business.

What’s archaic about working hard for your rewards? It’s the same principle in every day life.

It's archaic to think that "training well" means you run yourself into the ground every day. Maybe Lookman is such a good athlete that he finds the training easier than most, which Silva is misinterpreting as him not trying as hard?

Maybe Koeman and Large Samuel did the same? Maybe the Leipzig coach understood it better, which is why he was happier to give him minutes and Lookman was happier at that club?

Basically, we only have what Silva said to go off, and it doesn't mean that he's right either. For all we know Lookman is giving a sensible effort in training and doing what needs to be done, but because he isn't crawling off the training pitch in tears every day Silva has got it into his head that he isn't trying hard enough, which would be a stupid way to think. Everyone is different and good man management is about recognising that and adjusting accordingly

Why are you assuming Silva is hinting only that he’s not putting the effort in? Maybe in training his shooting has been really poor? His tactical decisions have been off? His defensive contribution is under par?

I think it’s archaic to assume doing well in training translates to “runs the most”.

Training is the platform to put tactics and planning for the next match into practise. If Lookman isn't following instruction or finds it too difficult to do what is asked of him then he has no part in the team. Training is not all about running yourself into the ground but showing willing and following the game plan. If Lookman is failing at these than no place for him in the team.

Of course it is, but that doesn't mean that it isn't what Silva thinks

If it was the other things you mentioned, I don't think Silva should have addressed it the way he has, nor would he to be honest. Issues like that are an arm around the shoulder situation, not a slam a player in the press situation, that's reserved for when a player isn't "working" hard enough (I.e running)

I mean, if you actually read what he says it’s pretty clear that he’s not talking about running through sand dunes. He makes it pretty obvious he means that he’s not following instructions and taking on board what’s being asked of him.

You can see when you watch him that he’s a street footballer, wanting to play the game his own way, but that’s not really how top level football works.

For all we know, Lookman is doing what he needs to do on the tactical things. Certainly when he's played he hasn't seemed out of step with everyone else, which would be the biggest evidence that he wasn't getting it

Everyone is jumping to the assumption that he has a bad attitude here. Maybe, just maybe, Lookman's attitude is fine but Silva is out to lunch over a perceived slight or the fact that Lookman doesn't look "bothered" enough when he trains? Maybe he's wrong?

Maybe Lookman goes about things differently and the managers we've had haven't appreciated that fact? Maybe the Leipzig manager did appreciate it and knew how to man manage Lookman to get the best out of him where as the managers we've had haven't?

There have been plenty of players over the years who have been better in a match situation than in training, and the former should always trump the latter, because the former is what really matters

People in here seem to have made up their minds that his attitude is the problem

Maybe he's just an unorthodox player and a different approach is needed to get the best out of him?

I’m not sure he’s that good. But hard to tell with the limited time we actually get to see him.

I just don’t think he wants to be here. His time in Germany showed him something he liked and he wants more of it.

Which is fair enough I think.

Could be the case

I just think it's disappointing that so many are queuing up to bash him in here, when we don't know the in and outs of the situation and it could just be that Silva can't work out how to get through to him. It's being presented as Lookman's fault in here, but we're only a few months away from Silva saying the players had to motivate themselves and all that (Which he was rightly criticised for by many on the forum). Maybe Silva just isn't equipped to get through to players like Lookman?

Or maybe neither of them are to blame and it's just a whirlwind of circumstances that have convened all at once to stop this from working?

Silva talks about him not being brought on in one match because he’s not there defensively. I think you need to read the full article.

I don't think it's necessarily a bad attitude in general, but as I said, I think it's clear from watching him that he doesn't really do what we're asking our wide players to do. People question why Walcott gets picked ahead of him but I've always thought it was blatantly obvious, it's because Walcott plays the role the way the manager wants him to. When you get to 21, and numerous managers haven't fully trusted you to perform your role properly (and let's not forget he had a period out of the team in Leipzig too) it does start to suggest that you may have a problem. Whether that's a deliberate disregard for instruction or just an inability to learn and implement plans I don't know, but it's concerning.
