Ademola Lookman

That would all be great if you couldn't the exact same about Walcott except he still gets start after start
True but again Walcott is a right winger Lookman plays from the left or as a ten. I don't think he can be effective on the right and obviously doesn't track back enough for Silva. As such I see him being sold, we've tried but for whatever reason it's not working. We need someone from the bench who will bring more.

I just interpret sell as equal to writing off. And I will absolutely argue there is no good reason to automatically write Bernard into the XI for next year. The build up stuff is good but I refuse to believe Lookman, Onyekuru or a new signing couldn't learn that stuff while offering more in the box.
Possibly but you need options at least two players for each position. I don't think anyone should be nailed on but impact isn't just about their dry stats Bernard has definitely been a live wire in our team. Henry is definently interesting and could bring more. As it is we have nobody to replace Walcott apart from Richarlison and he prefers the left too. I just think it's time to bring someone new in, we have given Lookman a bit of time here its just not working out, doesn't make him a bad player just for whatever reason it's not working out and I don't think it will. Whether it's attitude, style or what. So time to move on. Look for someone who can be more productive.

My view is 15 starts in 2 years is really not enough time to make a judgement on a player who is only 21. Selling him now could be a huge mistake. It could also be inconsequential. I'd prefer we wait as long as possible to find out.

Maybe but depends on a few factors I suppose. I would sooner move on Walcott and Tosun before him but we may not get the kind of offers we want for them. I like the kid he does have great potential I am just not sure about his attitude and his consistency at this stage, if he gets his head down and gets more minutes next season I'm not against him staying. I just see us cutting our wage bill and we will get a good offer for him and take it and go for someone like Neres or someone in that mould.

I think there's an issue that people assume black footballers should be more powerful. I think he has a languid style and I'm not sure he's ever going to be the most hard working, or high octane football player. That's not to say people are racist but rather that his style is more languid. He plays in slow motion almost, which in many ways allows him to go past people so easily.

As regards the club situation there is some presumption. He fell out of favour in the summer. It may be his attitude hasn't been right. It may just be he fell out of favour and hasn't been able to force himself in. I know you have the Silva comments last month, which can be read negatively or positively. On the one hand he needs to show more in training (negatively) but that he has fantastic ability (positive).

We have to be careful with being too presumptuous either way. Davies they clearly like as with the contract and he's hardly been involved. Lookman has been involved much more. He's partly being kept out by Bernard being fantastic and the team being settled. He may well think, in pre-season he can force his way in.

I have always gone either way on him too. However you can see the ability he has when he's on the pitch. Today he comes on and looks natural on the pitch. Against City away the same. At Liverpool away he was argued he the best player on the pitch when he came on. Some ability that. Even last week, he's on for 20 minutes and has 2 shots and nearly creates a scoring opportunity with a back heel.

As I've said I've not always been his biggest fan, but to me he does the difficult things very very well. Notably, he creates opportunities in tight spots in the final third. I think (and hope) we will be loathed to lose him.

I suspect that contract will be a telling factor though. 2 years left, he will either sign or I imagine they may sell.

This is a really interesting debate and @Neiler I see a point now that the reporting may be totally different. It's subtle and it's not something you can prove. However, from this discussion:
- Lookman, Silva/Brands and the fans may have higher expectations of Lookman because he's not a local lad and we expect him to score loads of goals.
- He has not been involved much. Davies has been involved a lot more, and in fact, when Schneiderlin came in ahead of him, or when other things conspired that Davies might have played, he didn't. Lokman has been in and out of the squad and often not even made it onto the bench. Davies has been not getting selected for England U21 as much as Lookman has been - is that correct?
- The questions about Lookman's attitude have been totally unfair and baseless. Dowell, Davies, DCL seem to show their money, 'fashion-sense' and all the stuff that we criticise in Lookman, but don't get that same style of criticism. They are criticised mainly for playing and Lookman for attitude. Doesn't make sense.

In short, I think we have to be careful what we wish for. I don't think we are currently suited for flair, stylish or attacking players. We are still behaving in that old fashioned 80s style approach that wants a tough tackling aggressive player who just knocks over the opposition and kicks the ball into Row Z. When Bernard wasn't playing well he was trashed. We have to be more patient with flair and attacking players!

Good post mate.

I think he’d be perfectly fine receiving 15-30 minutes a game. Oftentimes the problem is that he comes on with 5 minutes to spare or something negligible. Other times Silva has opted for bizarre substitutions in Lookman’s stead. Give him some run and hopefully he continues to show what he has the past two outings.
