'Result Must Strengthen Desire'
@Everton
Roberto Martinez insists his Everton players must learn from conceding late on against Bournemouth.
The Blues looked like they had snatched a dramatic victory at Dean Court when
Ross Barkley fired home from inside the box.
But Junior Stanislas headed past
Tim Howard in the final seconds to claim a point for the Cherries.
Martinez, while disappointed, admitted the result must serve as a lesson for his players.
“The first goal that they scored is a world class finish,” he reflected. “But it could have hit the post and gone anywhere. Then the cross for the third goal is a hopeful one and the finish is a disappointing one for us. But it came from momentum and throwing bodies forward.
“Unfortunately we couldn’t defend that action. Overall, to start in the manner that we did, getting the two goals, then the reaction to them coming back at 2-2, means it is very tough to not take the three points.
“This needs to get us more determined and have a stronger desire to win games in the Premier League.”
The Blues boss added that his side should have come away with all three points, after going ahead through
Ramiro Funes Mori and
Romelu Lukaku, and then again via Barkley’s late strike.
“Take nothing away from Bournemouth, they got themselves back in it,” continued Martinez. “But that is when you get tested and you find out whether you have that winning mentality. To get that third goal was a big moment in the game.
“But straight after, we start the play with an extra defender, and all we need to do is see the game out.
“It’s a hopeful ball into the box and suddenly it is in the back of the net. That’s what happens in football. Bournemouth got that little bit of luck.
“From our point of view, we felt that we lost two points at two stages in the game. That is a feeling that is difficult to explain.”
