Stats suggest the defensive side of Ross is better:

2013/14

Barkley Total apps 34 Tackles 33 Interceptions 21
Naismith Total apps 31 Tackles 28 Interceptions 13

Barkley was a sub twice as less as Naismith (9 times compared to 18), so that probably evens it out a fair bit, but not to the extent it'd wipe out the interception figures.

Minutes played would settle it, but not readily available.
Naismith played 1419 mins last season compared to Barkley's 2288. Which means that Naismith puts in more tackles per minute and similar interceptions per minute. He also scored more goals per minute and created more assists per minute.

Face it lads... Naismith is boss!

From the OS:

Naismith played two thirds the amount of minutes played by Barkley (Naismith 1,820 to Barkley's 2,616).

When you look at the stats from the OS it reveals in terms of total defensive category/work (clearances/blocks/interceptions):

Naismith 30 C/B/I
Barkley 42 C/B/I

So that's pretty much evening out given time on the pitch.

Successful passing is where it really shows in Barkley's favour:

Naismith 430
Barkley 1,052

Naismith may be only two thirds of the time on the pitch than Barkley last season but his successful passes per minute on the pitch are barely two thirds that of Barkley's.

Naismith had it over Barkley in terms of goals - 9 goals compared to 6 for Barkley.

What you're looking for from an advanced midfield player is a good mix of defensive duties, passing and attacking play. Obviously, Naismith is really an attacker without pace or height who's being utilised to good effect of late as an advanced midfielder (plays in the hole actually) and that reflects his goalscoring. But that role (as well as defensive duty and goals/shots on target) requires a player above all to be a pivot, and that's where Barkley is head and shoulders above Naismith. As said, Naismith is basically an adapted attacker doing a job in behind the attacker, he cant do that creative work someone like Barkley does.

I'm with Hodgson on footie stats. Ross Barkley is potential world class, Naismith is not and we all know it. In Ross' absence Naismith can do a job though.

He's scored 3 in 3 and if our defence wasn't hideously leaky then his goals could and probably would've won us games. Barkley hasn't currently got much of an end product while Naismith clearly does. Its easy to knock him simply because Barkley is more exciting to watch. Barkley will turn out to be a better player, but only if he improves his decision making and passing final third.

It's not really just defensively I'm talking about though, it's more the general area they play especially when having the ball.

The reason why we're less open is because when we loose the ball Naismith is normally ahead of the play while Barkley isn't.

Naismith is winning me over but I think it's generally one or the other although I would push Barkley wide before Naismith if I wanted to play them both.

However there's plenty of games and its good to have subs that can change games so its really not a problem.

I honestly think in the big games we should be playing Besic instead of Naismith and that's not because of Naismith I just hate playing 4-4-2 against good teams.

Perhaps. But there is no way Besic should come in ahead of Naismith for big games. Naismith has proven time and time again that he can step up in the big games. Goals against Chelsea and Arsenal this year and the winner against Chelsea last year and a goal against Liverpool the year before. He is a big game player. I think our tactics in the big games are spot on, if we had performed better defensively against Chelsea and Arsena we'd be look at 6 points.

seriously we have a leaky defence. those Chelsea goals where not a result of Naismith but simply bad defending overall. sometimes the problems are simpler than you think

I don't think it's Naismith's fault but he works as a 2nd striker and I don't like that formation in big games. It really has nothing to do with Naismith, just my oppinion on what formation makes most sense for big games.

Trying to hard again McGeady, giving the ball away again. There's freedom, and there's playing [Poor language removed] mate. You're playing [Poor language removed].

Haha desperate distortion of "stats" there
