Alcohol.......

I like a drink, but it's not about the effect of the alcohol these days, beer, wine and whisky all taste bloody good !

There was an interesting programme on the other week about the effects of drinking within the official guidelines using twins, one drinking every day and the other having one big binge

That's the big thing for me, I don't really like the taste of most of it really.

Give me a cherry coke anyday!

I'm still in the alcohol is new and fun stage of my life, as I approach the last week of my school life. Tried to be as sensible as I can most of the time, but as happens, had an awful night a few months back resulting in waking up in a pool of sick with someone else's coat on, with no idea how I got home. Haven't had a drink other than with a meal since, and to be honest, since then I don't plan on!! However a holiday in Magaluf followed by university will surely see to that.

I find the culture of needing Alcohol to have fun on a night out sad, especially amongst my age group to be honest. Why is that the case? Its become a replacement for genuine social skills, and I can see why it can become a problem, when that replacement becomes a full time remedy. Of course, on that front, the social attitude of looking down of sufferers, and blaming them needs to change, how does that help things?

Managed pubs for a few years. The difference in people with a gargle or two down their necks is quite shocking tbh. Sensible, coherent individuals turn into total arsewipes within a couple of hours. Probably what put me off drinking if I'm honest.

I'm not teetotal, quite enjoy a nice bottle of red with a meal. Usually followed by a wee dram of some Scottish gold. Cannot remember the last time I was bladdered drunk. The last time I was out until the early hours was with @chicoazul earlier this season, but that was more about the casual bumming than the beer.

It's a very tough one this, as culturally we are a nation of drinkers, this includes, Scotland, Wales and Ireland.
I would say that this also applies to some Scandinavian countries too. I don't know whether this is something that has carried on from our Viking heritage and just hasn't gone away. Also the drinks industry itself deliberately targets young people very early on with the way it promotes drink - glamorous young people all having fun with a drink in their hand etc.
You never see an advert with a couple of fellas sat in a corner boozer, setting the world to rights .

What I do know is that certain people for whatever reason seem to be more susceptible to problem drinking than others. I've got a good mate from school whose life has been ruined by ale and another mate whose dad smashed the car up last year whilst drunk. Everyone knows someone like this .

I think as we get older most people grow out of getting drunk or stop drinking atogether as their commitments to work, family etc grow. However this doesn't happen to a minority and this is the real problem especially the hidden drinker - a couple of glasses of wine after work to unwind , a couple more when the kids have gone to bed, followed by a night cap .

I really don't what the answer is, but I do believe that education can be a massive part of answering the problems that surround drinking. Parents have a massive to play too in educating kids about drinking too.

It's going to be very interesting to see how this thread develops !

i'll will admit to being a proper binge drinker. i dont drink everyday, can go weeks without a drink. but when i do go out, i drink excessively to say the least.

I just wish I could go me bucket the next morning after a heavy sesh, just like I could 10-12 years ago.

Nowadays, my vital organs just shriek for mercy, so I try to take it easy - until I get the taste........
