Aldi?

To be fair the supermarkets like Tesco don't rip people off at all. Supermarket profits are thin. In fact, all supermarkets lose money on every single home delivery they do. Not many people know that.
Any chance of Aldi offering deliveries in the near future do you reckon? That would be immense, a step forward for civilisation.

Aldi and Lidl have succeeded by offering a much smaller product range which reduces their costs. A large Tesco could have twenty times as many products on sale as a typical Aldi.

Yeah, I agree. Puzzles me when people say Tesco rip people off but are quite happy to spend quite a bit more on daily items in their local corner shop. The supermarkets aren't perfect and there is always room for improvement, but food shopping is generally a pleasant experience in this country. The other day I bought a couple of £3 steaks from my local Morrisons and I have to say they were every bit as delicious as the £25 cut that I had in the overpriced restaurant a few days before.

I seem to recall Aldi being more common in the USA in the late 70s/early 80s, and then lots of them closed since other chains grew (Food Lion/Martins/Stop-n-Shop/Jewel etc.) in numbers. But I guess a few remain here and there.

As I understand, it's Tesco's suppliers who get ripped off, not the customer.

I'm no expert on how supermarkets work, I was always under the impression Tesco bought stock from manufacturers and sold it through their stores. But as I understand it, Tesco just charge the manufacturer for the right to sell their stock in Tesco stores (and no doubt take a nice cut of the sale price).

Happy to be shot down if this isn't the case.

Aldi's meat and vegetables is usually much better than those of the big four, but as someone mentioned the lack of dates can make it a lottery.

Obviously not the quality of the butchers or local green grocers which I do like going to, although it easily wipes the floor with ASDA et al.

Also, their baby wipes (for all those with younger children) are top notch and much, much cheaper than your Pampers or whatever other brand!

we have a tesco mega store 2 minutes from my house but we travel 12mile round trip to Aldi. Could say i'm a fan.
