You were doing it wrong.I remember being in Lille and watching him maraud toward the box with the ball and take on a shot just missing the post. Probably the most excited I’ve ever been watching Everton.
There has been an improvement, but from a very low base of expectation.
He is well past the age where he can "develop" and he is what he is, but I haven't lost all faith in the ability of good coaching and hard work to get more from any player.
It is as much about confidence and attitude - if he is willing to work and gets an extended run, we will recognise that for what it is and give due praise.
It's the shirkers that get no sympathy and it will be ever thus.
I would agree that players don't tend to improve much at 24 funfamentally, but players can improve. We saw it a lot under Moyes, buying players around that age, who with the right structure and coaching kicked on a bit.
He seems to like the game simplified to me, where he can bomb up and down, go on the outside and occasionally cut in. He has looked a lot quicker, and a lot more hard working on that side of the pitch. For me players don't go from not working hard to working hard coincident with a position switch. I'd imagine he's just more comfortable.
Long story short, at 24 I do think he can get better. He can get more consistent in performances, and can work at crossing. He is quite good at passing in that position. Strangely, I could see him becoming a right back if Holgate doesn't nail the spot down. There's an opportunity there for someone to take.
Think people might be going slightly overboard about his last few games to be honest, but he's certainly been better this season than he was for most of last season. He's still not really looked like someone I'd want pencilled into the team long term but he's doing enough to keep his place for now.
This was always his problem at Arsenal, if he can get that consistency into his game then he may well prove his worth.
What pace? He runs like scooby doo not like the roadrunnerJust keep him on the right and have his role be clear, support the fullback , use his pace to get us up the pitch and be an outball to help us in transition.
Well I have to admit he has improved in a couple of games, Fulham away and Chelsea on Saturdaywhere he was very good first half and kept at it in the second half, still a but wasteful with his centres, seems to panic and slash wildly instead of looking up and measuring his passes, but he has surprised me in those two games. Could never ever see him as a full back, he hasn’t got the natural aggression for the job, mind you he has surprised me once, nah forget it, never make a full back. You probably remember me slaughtering him after Southampton, which if anyone reads my posts regularly will know it's not soemthing I do often. I had pretty much written him off after that game. He looked to me to be a player who had natural ability, but couldn't put it together. I'll be frank, he resembled a championship number 10 to me. A lad who would be at somwhere like Blackburn, have the team built around him and one who could create chanes in the championship, but never quite be good enough for the PL.
As soon as he moved to the right, we saw a different player. He was up and down, bursting past people, energetic, stronger on the ball etc. I try to give people the benefit of the doubt and say he wasn't just slacking before, as I don't think he was. I suspect the nuance of having to play the opposite side is a bit beyond him, and he had lost all confidence. He looks much happier on the right.
He's no world beater, but at least he looks a player who could feature. I can see what he can offer. And whereas it was all banking on his slick occasional passing now, that is now just one aspect to his game. He provides good cover to the fullback, goes on the outside well and carries the ball. Essentially that physique and speed he has, is now beint utilised.
He's probably not a long term answer, but medium term he is a big improvement on what we had before, which is a big positive. Left field suggestion, but I do think there could be a very decent attacking right back in there.
The pubs ran out of beer! You were doing it wrong.

I think it has to do with coming through at Arsenal under Wenger. They weren't a team that did a whole lot of crossing and you can see it as he loves trying to thread balls in along the ground whenever he can instead of whipping them in. Which means when he does have to whip it in he isn't so good at it.I think its a technique issue with him. I mean he will calmly place through bals and pick people out, so doubt he has done a lot of crossing. So it's something to work on. He has certainly got the physique to get up and down, and has good dribbling ability.
