Last game of the season when all the games didn't finish on the same day.
Win; go up as Champions ( and stop Br**t*n being Champions.....as if)
Draw; Finish 3rd but still promoted
Lose; Finish 4th and miss out.

Won 2-0 with late goals from Dave Swindlehurst and Ian Walsh

There is a YouTube clip of a brief report of the game on ITV's News at Ten. Alistair Burnett sounds like something from Pathe News even though it was 1979. Mrs Whittles parents ( her Dad was a retired Army Major) saw it on TV , pitch invasion and all and then started to realise what her beautiful daughter had let herself in for.

Was that the same season Brighton had to win at Newcastle to get promoted?

It was 78/79 with the Burnley game I'm May 11, a Friday night , the day before the Arsenal v ManUtd Cup Final
Dont know what year the Brighton one was just remember either motd or the big match showing it and Brighton basically taking over St James

I checked ( I feel dirty now). The vermin won 3-1 at the Barcodes on 5 May which sealed promotion for them to the top Division for the first and only time. (I do know they were relegated on 7 May 1983 - after four undistinguished seasons - as my eldest son was born on that great and momentous day).
According to Vermin TV the crowd contained a significant number of Sunderland fans who were supporting Newcastle in the hope that it would derail Brightons promotion bid in their favour.
Stoke were the othe promoted team.
