The BBC have a done a 'Final Score' for the first day of the Football League in 1888. We played Accrington Stanley. Interspersed with the 'goal' news, are items connected with the birth of codified football.
Was reading something and came across the name Raich Carter. It reminded me of when I played for Leeds United Colts in the early 1950's (I was 16/17 years old) Raich Carter was manager of Leeds United. My Dad's job had moved us to Leeds from Liverpool in 1951. Raich Carter was one of the big name players before and after the war. He was a very dapper man, smartly dressed and with silver hair. The Colts team had an important cup game and the ex player, Harry Derbyshire, who ran the Colts told us that Mr Carter was coming in to give us a pre-match talk. We waited with bated breath. He came in. Camel hair overcoat with a velvet collar, white silk scarf, immaculate silver hair. He looked around slowly and finally spoke. 'I don't want to see any sliding tackles today, you play football on your feet not on your arse'. Then he was gone. I never saw him again.
I can't remember if I've posted this before? If I have, apologies.
Seeing Peter Osgood's photo reminded me. When I was working in Windsor (Peter Osgood was a Windsor lad) on a Friday 5 or 6 of us used to go to a local pub in Windsor We often saw Peter Osgood in the pub (this was after he retired) and if he was on his own he used to join us. One Friday when he joined us, the topic of conversation turned to 'dirty' Leeds. The question was asked, 'who was Leeds dirtiest player?' I suggested that everyone write their choice on a piece of paper and forecast that I would have the same name as Peter Osgood. The result was: 3 votes for Norman Hunter, 1 vote for Billy Bremner - me and Peter Osgood had Johnny Giles!
