My mate, who I played golf and snooker with, was on Brentford's books as a junior - Tommy Lawton was manager of Brentford then. I was on Leeds United books as a junior - Raich Carter was manager then. Great names from the past.

I may, unknowingly, have played against Bert Trautman. Just after the war, my mate at school moved to Huyton. He lived opposite a German prisoner of war camp. We used to go and play football on a pitch next to the camp and the German prisoners often used to come and join in. I have read somewhere that Bert Trautman was in a camp near Liverpool.

Just had a quick read of his story as I only knew about the broken neck, sounds incredible. If there isn’t a book about it it looks like there should be!

I met him at the Etihad a few years ago before he died.
