The fixation on age is starting to get a bit wild here. I could understand if we already had a massively ageing squad but we had one of the youngest squads last year. People are saying 27 is the twilight years over on the Doucouré thread. It’s actually a bit mad.

people don't seem to understand how far the game has come in diet, fitness, nutrition, medicine, psychology that have contributed to players having a longer shelf life. Age has so many factors to consider, it's not as simple as saying he's 32 he's over the hill.

How fit is the player, does he lead a healthy lifestyle, has he had a lot of injuries how many games they've played in their career and at what level. players who look after themselves can play too 35+. If you go out on the drink/smoke then you probably will be done by 32.

I drank and smoked and I was finished by 22.
Ffs.

A player has resale value if they’re good, end of. If a player is good and is relatively young, they may have more resale value - fine.
PSG were quoted 70 million not even a year ago for this player. Pretty reasonable resale value in Napoli’s eyes for an apparently ancient 28 year old. We’re lucky Gattuso is mad man to even be dreaming of something closer to 20/30mil

It’s because games like football manager and fifa have functions programmed into them that start to decline stats at that age....

The FM model is pretty fluid. Some players peak at 19, some at 27. Different characteristics have different rates of decline factored against the player's personality. I've had DCs perform at an elite level up until 39 and then drop off a cliff and I've had lads who stopped working and dropped off in their late 20s.

Not that I'm a nerd or anything.

Ha

I know it’ll be fluid and randomised to a certain extent. But you get the point I’m making.

it’s the same reason people become worried about board room happiness and resale values.

they’ve used simulations and try to extrapolate that experience to real life.

also, completely unrelated, I’m pretty sure I can fly a Boeing 747 to New York.
