He gets unfair flak in my opinion. When he’s fit he’s our best midfielder by a long way in my view. The best on the ball, the best tactically, the most aggressive off the ball, can work both ways as well. Fitness has been his issue and because our options to replace him are complete toilet we’ve rushed him back too quickly too often.

Match fitness in particular, he is one of these players that require 5 or so matches back from injury to get on top of his game. Definitely a poorer team without him.

He just needs someone behind him is all. Or to play with a partner that can cover.

I think the team has to be a cohesive unit. Good teams stretch us far too easily because of our lack of pace all over the pitch so you end up with scenarios of Allan lunging around if he’s playing deep lying mid or being played around too easily. If the midfielders ahead of him could actually cover some ground properly, and the centrebacks behind him could play a higher line, then all those gaps get smaller and suddenly he’d be everywhere in that midfield.

Last season we were putting out a half fit Allan to cover a huge swathe of pitch in between the deepest defence in the league and a load of lazy number 10s and wide players.

I do think there is room for him to pick his spots better. I'm sure if you look around you can find articles about how open our midfield tends to get and while other players are much more to blame he wouldn't be blameless either.

Still proper management and he'll do alright for us for as much as he's fit for.

Tactically I thought he looked utterly hopeless to be honest. Some of his positioning was proper League 2 stuff. He's a good footballer though, I don't doubt that. In the right unit he'd be very useful, but I'm not sure he's that good that i'd be building the right unit around him.

This. Whenever he played there seemed to be about 50 yards of wide open space in front of our centre backs for our opponents to exploit. It reminds me of when Kurt Zouma used to charge out of position and no one seemed to notice that we always got sliced through our left hand side on the counter all the time.

Now checking the date, It was 8th of May, 2016, when I watched him live, in Torino, Napoli was visiting Torino FC, they won 1-2 and he was amazing that game. Thought he will make great transfer moves in the future, EFC bought him and I was like 'vamos', but he wasn't that good, got injured a lot, and following Carlo's departure don't really know if he will still be able to call Merseyside home...

Spoiler alert: he will.
