I don’t think we’re in a position to do that though. The bigger the loss the less we can spend on transfers, or more likely may have to sacrifice good players.

I am by no means an expert on this but my maths works out as:

Signing fee: £21 million
Contract: £11 million over 3 years

So we are have paid him roughly £5.5 million in wages over the 18 months we have had him and the £21 million will have been spread on the books across three years meaning roughly £11 million on the books so far.

As such, if we get anything more than £10 million for him we would be breaking even on the transfer fee and would also be saving £5.5 million in wages.

I am not an accountant but that’s how I work it and I would like to think we could get near to the £10 million mark for him so it all depends on whether Benitez thinks his wages can be spent better elsewhere.

Happy to be corrected on my maths above as it’s all based on my rather hazy understanding of how football clubs work their accounts after listening to a few podcasts on the topic.

There's no denying the fella (when chasing the ball higher up the pitch) gets absolutely had off positionally and completely taken out of the game. It happens match after match after match.

The times where he does his best work and does win the ball back is when he's really deep and it tends to be in tight situations. He's great at nicking the ball. But when he goes looking for the ball to press, he's massively found wanting there's no doubt about that.

The idea that our football masters have any idea what they are doing is undone by purchases like Allan. How did
a so-called elite manager buy an old, slow, one paced, non-scoring midfielder, with no resale value like Allan?

Moyes has said that one never knows how purchases are going to turn out and that is true but Allan has average written all over him.

Elite managers work at bigger clubs with no financial issues. They need to win right away, it doesn't matter if a transfer costs too much to them as they wont be at the club in a couple of years time.

Stuff like that is why clubs get the right fit instead of focusing on the biggest name for the job.

Must have been a hellion at 25. Wish he were a few years younger. Battled throughout but he looks like he’s carrying a sack of bricks on his back as the game wears on
