Top balcony. Great view. Can see exactly how much of the pitch he covers.

And the fact our midfield looked like Swiss cheese on Saturday without him, I'd say you haven't got a clue If you think a 6'4 midfielder with endless athleticism doesn't make a difference.
Yes I watch him from The Upper Bullens and see him going missing for minutes on end and he doesn’t cover much of the pitch,

Endless athleticism, oh Jesus!! And you say I haven’t got a clue, that midfield would look like Swiss cheese when he plays if Doucoure and Gana weren’t carrying him, 6’4 that‘s what makes him stand out but not for his football ability, it makes me notice how docile he is. Endless athleticism, brilliant that, thanks for the laugh!!

I watch the games on my laptop and for me...

Good passing range
Very athletic
Variety of tackling choices (he can tackle and win the ball from all sides--if that makes sense)
Very strong

Etc etc...hes got the lot to be a top notch all round box to box player.

However....

Hes moved clubs in each of the past 3 summers and of course this means winter breaks -- limited summer training at a new club -- also the lack of games in previous seasons compared to starting all of ours in a much faster league.

Hes been thrown into the deep end in a poor team and is showing very high potential but also showing weakness and inconsistency in others as a young player.

The stats i dont have from a month or two back (theyre in this thread somewhere) but IMO they point to him being a clear DM.

For me, he looks like a midfield anchor. Dyche and Lampard have both said they are moving him around positionally and tactically to improve his all round game.
Well if you watch the games on your laptop you have a good excuse for not noticing how often he goes missing and is not in the game for long spells. Dyche and Lampard both said they are moving him around positionally and tactically to improve his all round game? Well they might notice the opposition are moving round and past him while he is learning to improve his game.

By the way if you are watching the game on your lap top because you are unable to get to the game I apologise I didn’t mean that as an insult, just that the camera follows the ball.

Tbh for most of the games hes played hes looked far more effective than Gana.

If we had a CM to come in he'd easily take Gana's role.

Its a fair comment. Going to the game you see the whole pitch and wider off the ball movement and positioning more clearly if youre focused on a player / area awaty from ball.

However, when any of our players are 10-20 yards away from him with the ball take a look at Onana. Hes always moved into space to support.

When you see something simple like that, consider that our other midfielders are doing it. Also when the opposition have the ball he marks space -- to intercept.

I remember his interception stats were pretty high which is one of the reasons I thought hed be a good anchor.

Hes not a Gana or a Barry Horne. Different type of midfielder.

Lampard and Dyche recently said that hes been coached in one position (as Martinez said DM) as European sides tend to do....they want to develop his all round game.

I watch him very carefully to make sure I am aware of his good points, I watch him marking space but don’t see that many interceptions to be honest, I see him constantly ambling around, in no rush to get back and help his defence of the team, he is playing in England now for an English where battling for the ball is essential for all of the game not part of it. I do see his potential I’m still waiting for a lot of it to provide something now for the benefit of the team, I’m not moaning for moaning sake, I just don’t see what others say he provides.

End of Jan. Open and scroll down for defensive numbers.

Some much better stats out there.

Zatara stats can impress some fans I imagine, they mean absolutely nothing to me, using your eyes will tell you all you want to know about a player’s ability’, they tell me that Onana can do a lot mote to help the team than he does, starting on Saturday if he plays, let’s see him sweat for the team instead of ambling around in space doing next to nothing.

I’d highly recommend Spec Savers. Especially from the Top Balcony.
Is Cameron an anagram of Bernard?

I mean theres 5 different players all with unique stats. At the very least it should be seen that hes superior to 4 of the leagues best players in his position within certain metrics.

It does seem like you prefer to have a Gana type who runs around alot...or an Iwobi...who runs around alot.

Not every top player needs to charge around the pitch...id have him sitting as an anchor.

I havnt been a fan of Onana last few weeks but without him against Fulham the central midfield was non existent. He seems to be the only player that can transition from defence to attack anyways quickly...pitty he can't pass.

I mean, he clearly can pass. Not sure where this has come from...hes made some great passes. Inconsistent yes.

It's clear already he is destined for champion league football he has that awareness. It's no surprise this is doubted by some Everton fans.

The sky is the limit for this boy. Once you take into account that he is 21, in his first season here, has moved 3 times in as many seasons and that he is playing for one of the worst teams in the best league in Europe. Then factor in that he has been consistently one of our better players, until the last few games when he has obviously been carrying an injury.

Having taken all that into consideration I find it hard to believe that people can slate the lad. He will probably be gone in the summer along with Jordan Pickford, who also gets slated by some, the money raised will not, in all probability, be used to strengthen the squad, but, will be used to prop up the figures on the balance sheet. Enjoy them both while they are still here, because, I think we will be even worse without them.

You can show glimpses of top level potential whilst also having a fairly ineffective game and Onana has largely sat in the middle of that Venn diagram.
