2022/23 Amadou Onana

Is he tho? James garner for about a quarter of his price every day of the week for me if we had any decent scouts we could find better players for the money we paid for him I’m sure. If you go missing for large chunks of a game that’s a bad game for me and he went missing in a few games.
Oh I agree fully. Garner “looks” like an incredible piece of business. I seem to post a hugely negative Onana post every other week, so wound up by both his lack of impact and also the excuse that he’s just a child that’s never played football before and he must be given a chance (but we should also sell him for £800million). I don’t think 2023 version of Garner joins 2023 Everton for that sort of money. We are less attractive than last summer.

The choice is probably would you rather Onana in the starting lineup, or £20mill book profit to spend on a replacement (I don’t think we’d spend the full sale proceeds, just the profit)? Any normal functioning club could easily buy a tough tackling running machine for £20mill, and be better off than last seasons Onana. We’d buy some perpetually injured 48 year old. So on balance, despite my constant fury with Onana, I hope we keep him and he fulfils the potential the whole of world football keeps telling us he has.

I agree, I didn’t even want to reply as it looks like im hating on him. I hope he does well and has some qualities but to suggest he’s top class is wrong he’s far away from being a top class player, let’s walk before we can run and let’s see some consistently good standout performances from him before spouting he’s worth anything close to £80m

Go back to the garner thread for the first load of games he played for us. And this was a player who had come from a PL team. He wasn’t great. Also, he was about half the price of onana rather than a quarter.

Even towards the end of the season he was hit and miss and some games seemed to go missing in.

But he is young. That’s expected. We get behind them even when that happens.

Garner, Onana, Patterson all had poor games and all had good games. It’s not hard to just get behind them as they all have massive potential. Same goes for Branthwaite this season who will also likely make mistakes.

But we potentially have a very good core group of young players. Until we chase them all out the club of course.

Same price half the price whatever, I’d still have him over Onana and he impressed me more than Onana did last season. Or until people get fed up being told they’re top class only to go backwards after a couple of years, let’s see how it goes hopefully all worth around £100m each in another 2 seasons that’s what some people will lead you to believe anyway.
