2022/23 Amadou Onana

Didn’t have many obviously calamity games but very very very ineffective is fair surely? I’d swap his stature for a different attribute because he doesn’t use it.

Also, lots of close range goals from midfielders that ran within 2 feet of Onana in the buildup, to then score from between the spot and 6 yard box with Onana outside the box with his hands on his head. It was a thing that opposing managers clearly exploited at one point as it was clear as day. His body position is totally wrong and has no clue what’s around him defensively. His first two strides aren’t quick enough to compensate.

Likes a good number of wall passes per game with Tarks to ensure his pass completion % stays high and he actually appears on a heat map.

The lad could (and probably will) be a massive talent, but the things he doesn’t do aren’t anything to do with mythical pace and power of the PL or his age.

Really frustrates me, as it’s all in there, but nothing other than long legged recover tackles gets shown.

That said, he’s better than any midfielder we can afford, so if he does wake up and have a breakout season, I hope it’s here.

The stats point to him being extremely effective.

I suspect any defensive positioning issues were being caused by being played out of position.

Really frustrating how hes not been used in the correct role as he has been fpr Belgium and prior to joining.

Pretty much agree with the first part of your assessment, but I'm not convinced there is some hidden potential waiting to burst out. It does happen with younger players, I remember being underwhelmed with Tricky Trev in his first season with us and he went on to greatness, but I am not sure Onana has that step up in him. I will be pleased and surprised if he proves me wrong.

I'll amend from

"Stones was booed for taking 'risks'. Booed nonetheless"

To...

"Stones was verbally abused for taking 'risks'. Abused nonetheless".

What a difference this has made  lol
Someone in the stand shouting at a centre half to get rid is not verbal abuse.

You'll get daft shouts at football matches of course, but I don't recall this regular abuse towards Stones or Lukaku for that matter.

The game where Stones dribbled round his own box gets brought up quite a lot. IIRC that was the ridiculous game over Christmas where we lost 4-3 to Stoke at Goodison and the crowd were just generally getting agitated because the defending from the team was appalling and we managed to throw away a game we dominated.

It was vs Tottenham in the game after that Stoke game. Peak Martinez by the way, the Stoke match lol

No, not verbally abused. He just put the fans on edge by pointlessly messing about in a dangerous area, they reacted and he told them to calm down. Complete exaggeration on your part rather than just admitting you're spouting nonsense. But whatever.

Yeah that isn't exactly how the entire exchange went though lol

Similar to how people were giving friendly advise to Ross Barkley about turning, right?
