2023/24 Amadou Onana

He was our best player first half.

Does his job well but is surrounded by dross.

Honestly don't know what people expect.
Agree with this, was one of the few first half actually showing for the ball and willing to receive it, unfortunately the movement in front of him was terrible, too many of them doing nothing to lose markers.

That being said he's not above criticism, there was more than a few times he received the ball in space and while no forward passes were on, he had the room to move up the pitch himself but opted to pass sideways or back, you drive forward and you open up passing angles and encourage more movement in front of you. Could of been more aggressive off the ball also.

Somebody said..."I'll give Onana my ST, then he can watch the game in relative comfort, rather than from the centre circle."

Many a true word spoken in jest?

Still haven't a clue what type of midfielder he is. Onana in a midfield with Garner or Gana just isn't working. As a previous poster said maybe he might work well with Gomes in midfield but I'd be seriously concerned about the energy levels put in by the two

I think we've looked best this season when it's been Onana and Garner in the middle. Everyone looks awful at the moment sadly. When you go through a slump this bad very few players emerge with much credit.

Some fans are clueless, Onana is a quality player playing in a team that is shot of all confidence due to the dinasour of a managers and his tactics, as others have said there is no movement off the ball in front of him at all, the one fantastic ball he did put through for Doucoure he nearly scored with it.

He is an international player for a reason.

Dyche has put us in a postion that has the fans shouting and screaming at all the players which has effected the confidence in them all, Yes their are some awful players in our team, but we should be playing better football and creating better chances, he has 2 full backs at the club and both were on the bench last night as he preferred a centre half and a 38 year old as a winger.

Dyche simply has to go, the worst manager in the club's history bar none

They were good in the October-November as the pivot.

That said Gana did a good job sweeping up infront of the back 4 in the second half so I can't see him being dropped for the Burnley game, Garner probably misses out again.

Lost count the times he gave the ball away carelessly.

His performances for Belgium are chalk and cheese.

He can play for sure, but for us only half arsed.
He gave the ball away 3 times in the whole game and you lost count?

Belgium play football, we play static hoofball, wonder why a midfielder looks bad.
Thing is for Belgium, and for whoever he plays for next, he can do the things he does really well without any burden of creativity, because they have players who can do that. He takes the defensive burden off them, they take the creative burden off him. That’s how a balanced team should work.

Sticking him in with Doucoure and Gana has no balance, they’ll work hard but they aren’t any better than him creatively. For all his flaws physically Gomes is probably the only option to balance the midfield. Yes, he can be a bit of a luxury, but Gana and Onana are the players that allow you to afford that luxury. Playing three midfielders with very little creativity between them makes all of them look worse.

I mean even Garner - Onana - Gomes/Harrison ahead of them as a trio has better ball retention and passing range than Garner - Onana - Doucoure.

We don't want to play football and none of them will look good. The game moved past "just be physical" ages ago, Dyche is just stuck and insistent on it.

Completely. Gana and Onana are both really good ball winners but there’s very little point if we can’t then keep it and do something with it. They just end up having to do it again.
