Careful on the Gruyere, while it's delicious, could be somewhat out of place next to a chicken fried steak....I think you could go garlic mashed and still maintain the appropriate level of "American food" to stay in this thread....Stir into a load of piping hot mashed potatoes a heaping helping of grated smoked Gruyere...my goodness. I'd imagine the gravy only adding to the flavor bomb.
