American looking for Premier League team to support

Yikes!

So is it a generally reliable rule of thumb that if a club is wealthy, glamorous, have name recognition in other countries, and have sophisticated and aggressive PR departments, that there's something sketchy about them?

I wouldn't be surprised. In many things non-sports, power and money simultaneously corrupt people and attract minions.

Take a look at Chelsea's owner, for example. They're basically his tool for laundering his dirty oil money.

Also, Liverpool have been involved in so many incidents over the years (Heysel (Google it, they don't take responsibility for it), supporting Suarez's racism, etc) that if you've got kids, probably best to avoid them.

I'm not too fussed about slating any other club.

This thread has made me realise how ace we are !

@PotentialFan you seem to be looking for a team to be proud of community wise. Good role models for kids etc. have a look at the Stephen Naismith article in the news section of the site. Also google 'Stephen Naismith homeless' to see what he was up to around Christmas and try 'Everton Alder Hey'.

To be honest Naismith struggled to make a big impact here as a player and is probably not in our strongest starting XI, but his recognition of those who are not in a great social position is phenominal at a time when income for ese guys is rocketing.

I love this club.

"Evertonians are born, not manufactured."

Born in New York (Baseball is in the DNA of New Yorkers) to National League parents (Dad a Giants fan, Mom a Dodgers fan, oh, the fights!). I may love the Mets, but I HATE the Yankees! So a life-long passion for rooting for the underdog.

"Evertonians do not choose, they are chosen."

I became a rabid footy fan when the MLS Seattle Sounders came into being. Once their season ended in November, I needed my footy fix, so I looked to the EPL. Back then, not every team's matches were broadcast, just the big clubs, ManU, Chelsea, Arsenal. Liverpool. I'm a huge Beatles fan, so I began to lean redwards, even though they weren't (then) underdogs--it didn't feel right, but why become a fan of a team when you can't see the matches?

But just before I saw a single EPL match, a local low-power tv station began broadcasting the video package Everton offers to international broadcasters which included that week's match. That the broadcast was three days after the match date didn't matter--it's not like (back then) the EPL tables were big news here in the States.

I was born to be an Everton fan. There was no choice on my part. "Those who understand need no explanation, those who don't, don't matter."

A small town just outside Edmonton, Alberta. I get back 2-3 times a season now, but hoping to do it more this season. I used to share a season ticket with a guy, but he moved to Hampshire and didn't want to keep it. I couldn't let it go so now I'm living 5000 miles away and a STH:Blink:

No, quite a bit smaller than St. Albert.... Beaumont. I do come to Calgary pretty much every month on business, but not normally the 1st Monday. I'm on our minor hockey board here too and that monthly meeting is also usually the same night, but will certainly get in touch if I am in Calgary..... Cheers

I'm from America as well, started watching English football after the 2010 World Cup. I struggled finding a team to support during those years. I watched Manchester City the most from 2010 to 2013 but I could never really get into it. Something just didn't feel right to me. I always had this secret crush on Everton: the fans, Goodison, the squad... something about the aura of the club just clicked with me. The 3-3 derby last season sealed the deal for me. That game put me through every emotion and I knew I was an Evertonian since that day. Watch all 20 PL teams play a few times, and you'll know when a team is right for you.
