It was during that conversation with José Ángel Sánchez, the club’s general manager, that Mr Ancelotti asked if they had found a replacement for Zinedine Zidane.

The initial reply was no, at which point Ancelotti confidently replied, “Well, you already have”, and thus the wheels were set in motion for his return.

He soon phoned Florentino Perez, who ‘enthusiastically accepted the proposal’, and everything was sorted between the two parties in ten minutes.

What a snake indeed. He did not receive any offer for the position, he wanted it himself in the first place.

That's pretty grim and makes a complete mockery of all the honourable shight he talks about in his book

Classic Everton that.

14:00 "Marcel just going to ring RM to see if we can get that good deal on those top players we've talked about"

"Thanks Carlo, you could really save my bacon this summer"

14:10 "How did you get on with your call, I take it Isco, Marcelo and Bale are all coming?"

"didn't have time to speak about the players sorry....ps you need to find a manager. Ciao."

Proper snake in the grass.

FFS his fanboys on here need to step up and defend that.

An utter scumbag of a man.

Worse appointment than Allardyce for me that.

Again the question has to be asked, why was the release clause set so low ? Especially when we were paying him so much more per year.

The clause was set so low for the same reason his wages were so high. He is one of the most decorated and successful managers in the modern era and Everton are.....well, Everton.

When it came to the negotiations it's pretty clear one side was happy to walk away if the deal didn't suit while the other was a little more star-struck and eager to please. He essentially viewed Everton the same way that Benitez viewed Dalian Pro.

Speculation though isn't it fella, that was a very big contract to turn down for that reason, what was it £11.5m a year ? Surely that compo should have been double that. My opinion anyway.
Yeah. Far more likely that the board just went "yeah tell you what Carlo, we'll throw in a peanuts release clause" for absolutely no reason.

Given how things played out, if you honestly believe that Carlo Ancelotti was signing for Everton (when we'd been in the bottom 3 a couple of weeks before) without an escape hatch.... well more power to you.
