What I said is that he could fit into / not look out of place in any of those teams. Not replace individual players.

Terrible comparison. Completely different players. Alonso was a deep lying playmaker, Gomes is a 7 or 8. Everything up until his move to Barca screamed world class. Alonso was brilliant but Gomes would beat more players on the dribble in one half than Alonso would in an entire season, matters not a jot though, COMPLETELY DIFFERENT PLAYERS

1) you can sign a player whenever you want, he can only move when the transfer window opens
2)his on loan until the end of the season, a transfer can be agreed to take place after his loan expires, but all of the paperwork can be completed now.

It's quite simple
Agree a deal now with Barca to sign him at the end of the season and sort out a contract with the player, meanwhile he stays here until his loan finishes.
When his loan expires he automatically goes into his new contract.
Liverpool signed Van dijk on 27th December, he officially moved on Jan 1st.
But as I said that wouldn't be the case here, one day after his loan expires his new contract starts.

If a player comes here and has a few good games, they are instantly a brilliant player in so many people's eyes. Don't bother waiting and see how it all pans out. They're right and you're wrong to throw any kind of perspective towards it.
Happened exactly the same when Tosun scored a few. You just have to look at the opening posts in his thread for this season.
I suspect some of them may be visitors from elsewhere

It’s not too far to compare both, they both sits above center circle and recycling the ball. 7 or 8 doesn’t matter as I don’t see their heatmap being too far apart. Alonso is superior in terms of vision passing tenacity and able to control the tempo of the game much better.
My point is Gomes is no doubt our best midfielder but that is because we never had a good one for decade and a half with the exception of Arteta. That shows how dire the club operate in terms of recruiting midfielders.
People coming on a football forum who don't thing gomes is a very good player probably shouldn't be coming on a football forum either though.
