Best midfielder we've had since Arteta and some are putting the boot in already. Honest to God I give up.

The fans who can’t see he is a class player, have not got a clue about football, so I wouldn’t worry

If a player comes here and has a few good games, they are instantly a brilliant player in so many people's eyes. Don't bother waiting and see how it all pans out. They're right and you're wrong to throw any kind of perspective towards it.

Happened exactly the same when Tosun scored a few. You just have to look at the opening posts in his thread for this season.

Yep, the same people will be the first to turn on him as well.

Haven’t seen nearly enough to justify some of the shouts we’re seeing here.

He’s always been known as a player who flattered to deceive and I think we starting to see that in recent games.

But, he’s restricted without Gana and is asked to play a different game to what he’s used to.

Still want to see more before I form an opinion on if we should spend the lot on him.

The rational approach... As you say, give it a few weeks time and a few more average displays and we´ll probably sound like the voices of reason on here when people start yelling send him back to Barcelona.

I´ve personally been really impressed by what I´ve seen in most of the games, let´s just see if he´s capable kicking on from here and justifying what will be a large price tag. Since the derby he hasn´t played well, let´s hope that changes.

It’s not too far to compare both, they both sits above center circle and recycling the ball. 7 or 8 doesn’t matter as I don’t see their heatmap being too far apart. Alonso is superior in terms of vision passing tenacity and able to control the tempo of the game much better.
My point is Gomes is no doubt our best midfielder but that is because we never had a good one for decade and a half with the exception of Arteta. That shows how dire the club operate in terms of recruiting midfielders.

It is a massive stretch to compare. Gomes is much more box to box and doesn't sit anywhere near as much as Alonso. Heat maps and all that nonsense i take no notice of, i trust my eyes. Your point about the club's shameful recruitment is spot on though to be fair.

Feel like we have seen this movie before. Yes he was very very good for some games and I would take the punt on him if we can.. but I remember Schneiderlin was superb his first half season.. couldn’t put a foot wrong. I literally thought we had signed the most underrated gifted footballer I had seen in years.. then it vanished. Not saying Gomes will do a Schneiderlin, I’m just cautious that we too quickly raise a player so high that there is nowhere to go but down. I would see out the season before we lump a massive fee down.

For the record I hope that Gomes is the next Arteta but it really is too early..

God, the Schneiderlin comparison is so apt. 'The best midfielder since Arteta' is just complete hyperbole on the back of a handful of games. We have signed a player who has really struggled for form, albeit at Barcelona and that doesn't prove he can't be a good player for us. But what it does show is that it's not an absolute guarantee he will be a success for us.

He's looked a class act in some games he's played but is that a guarantee he will be turning out these peformances consistently in May? Will he adapt when teams adapt their tactics to combat him? Will his mentality be good enough?

If you watched the last three games you'll have seen a different Gomes who really struggled. Reasons for that definitely but I'm not in a rush to be building players up only to see them knocked down within 6 months.

Fair enough, im aware of how many false dawns we have had, but I prefer to call a spade a spade and Andre looks like a superb player, currently.

I dont think hes struggled, of course he hasnt been head and shoulders above everything on the pitch, but the whole team has really struggled, all 3 games he was defo in our top 3 players.

Gomes does get further forward and has looked fantastic... but no better than Snides did those first couple months. So if we go in only what he has done sure then he’s good but we shouldn’t blow it all yet to sign him. If a good deal can be reached fine, but don’t blow our striker money for it.

I don’t think anyone other then Digne has played well since the derby though as proven on Sunday. Let’s just hope come tomorrow we don’t have a hangover and actually win the game

I was a massive fan of Morgan after his last season at Saints, he was so, so good, utterly stank the gaff out at United after that tho, so the signs were all there.

Personally think Barry is the best midfielder we’ve had since Arteta and I’d be over the moon if Gomes hits that level of consistency.
