Definitely see your "standing still* shout but these guys will get better so they're more of an investment. Honestly think we'll ship out a hell of a lot players this summer. Also fresh blood like Onyekuru and a Vlasic with game time and in the new system will be a beneficial.
Henry and Vlasic for 25 m each
Add 10m and we have Gomes and Zouma.
However I hope we keep all 4
I think shifting wages will be the problem this summer not transfer fees

Does anyone know how these loans work? Maybe naively I thought EFC would have an option to make the loan permanent agreed when they negotiated the loan? Otherwise you run the risk of simply acting as a shop window for other premier league clubs to see how a player does in this league?

Strong rumours that Barca didnt want a loan at first, they wanted rid, but we considered him a massive gamble.

I mean hindsight is wonderful, but imagine if we would have spent 40m on an injured player and he then totally flopped.

We wanted a try before you buy and that’s perfectly understandable without hindsight. After all, Moyes frequently used this to good effect. They did want him totally gone.

That’s probably still the case and he seems happy here.

It’s not as though Barca have missed him is it? Plus they’ve got the wonderkid from Ajax from next season. We pulled their pants down over digne but they appear to have done likewise to us with the Mina fee so it’s only fair we come to a fair compromise on this one.

Yup, Barcelona wanted to offload Gomes but it was something to talk about this summer and fortunatelly (or not) it will. Hope he'll stay, Everton gave him a hand and help him to establish again as a propper footballer, spell at Barcelona was nightmare for him.

Yes I'm not having a go at them for not jumping in, he'd had a very underwhelming time at Barca and the wages are high so however 'cheap' the transfer fee may be this is still a sizeable investment. I think it was an imaginative loan and has to be considered a success overall.

I'm just not comfortable with the idea that EFC bring him over and acclimatise him to English football and then another team swans in and takes him once he's proven himself. It puts the club in a bad light and encourages the idea that it's a stepping stone to a 'big club'. There should be something in the loan contract that makes sure that if EFC want him they get first refusal or a guaranteed price for instance?

If the player himself doesn't want to stay that's another matter. Although I think as far as you can tell from the outside he seems to have settled well here?

Yeah but you cant blame him for wanting to explore all options.

Yes, again I'm not moaning, well I suppose I am a bit, but really it's just frustration. I'd like to think that AG will feel that the club has taken a chance with him and he'll want to pay that back. That's maybe naive though and if someone is dangling CL football then that's obviously going to be a big draw.

It is naive. We didn't take that much of a chance on him - we loaned him for a season, and he's more than repaid the favour. If he sees himself playing CL football and a club at that level is interested, good luck to him. Hopefully we can convince him this is a project worth getting involved in.
