I hope people allow for the fact he isn't anywhere near match fit and due to the injury cancelled out the pre season. I'm just happy he's back in the side, if he can gather some momentum as the season comes to an end then he's done magnificently this season after what happened.

And Gomes is a 6/8.

His job is to sit, break up play and drive the ball forward.

I think thats part of the problem, people have an idea of what he SHOULD be doing, not what his role in the side is.

Now I will say he should certainly be chipping in with more goals, but its a little like wondering why Gana didnt score more.
For the first time I agree with everything you say Goat.

The problem is the 2nd part of his job 'break up play' - he has zero ability or longing to do that. He is too slow to track, its not natural to him and his tackling is pathetic.

You see im not even sure what we need, 442 in 2020 is proper weird and with us having no idea what Gmblammo is its hard to say what we need.

We need creativity and we need goals from midfield, we need somebody who dominates and controls the game, I doubt any such player exists, maybe the boy Neves at Wolves off the top of my head.

We need a doucoure imo, somebody who will just bulldoze through the opposition, win the ball and sprint up the other end and join in with attacks. Our big problem right now is that none of our centre mids are capable of playing in a midfield 2, because we didn't buy any of them for that reason.

Right now our best combo is Delph and gomes imo, and when Delph is injured, Davies is the next best thing, but he's sadly been really poor this season. Mainly because he's a young lad, who needs two alongside him in the middle.

We've got too many mids who should have the role of "can step in when there's a few injuries" but they're all being asked to be first choice.

Ideally we ship off schneiderlin and siggurdsson because they really don't fit in this formation and get a proper powerhouse plus gbamin back. They'd be decent options, but that's a tough ask to get rid of those two.

lol lol

He's not the best granted but to say he has zero ability in that regards is comical. He works best with somebody who has lots of legs alongside him, as we saw with Glast season and at times with Davies this season. I'm sure he'll work well with Gbamin when he's fit.

Anyway, I'd much rather focus on the positives than the negatives. He gets the ball forward quickly with accuracy like no other midfielder we have, and the likes of Richy and Dom will only benefit from that.

Yes, he had one of the best defensive mids next to him last season.

Errr, we were continually dire away from home, finished 8th and out of the cups early.

What do you expect with someone of lesser ability than Gueye next to him?

....terrific on the ball, proper footballer but he’s out of the game when the opposition get beyond him. He’s clearly off the pace following his injury, but even so he’s not the best of runners.

Playing 2 up front, we’re really lacking athleticism in central midfield. If Gomes is a regular starter next season we need to compensate for his lack of pace.

You dont need pace in the middle of the park.

I think he's never been quick but is a powerful runner with the ball when he's at full fitness, it's hard to fully judge his ball recovery ability when he isn't in peak condition. He's miles off that right now. So we have to be patient with him, he has that touch of class and can control a game even when not 100%. Agree he does need legs around him though it's why Davies plays I suspect.

Him and gbamin should be good on paper..gbamin can get about the pitch quickly and will put a tackle in. I'd be happy with those two as starters, remember people were writing mina off after his injury plagued first season. We definitely need better options in midfield than schneiderlin and sigurdson though so hope to see them both moved out in the summer. Potentially Davies loan depending on Europa or not.
