Totally agree with this. This is one of the reasons why I struggle to get my head round our recruitment policy at the moment. Signing the likes of Gomes, Digne, Delph etc on pretty big deals doesn't make sense if you're not trying to push into the top bracket. They're in their peak years, their value isn't going to substantially increase, so why bother. We could be 12th in the league with Kenny, Davies, Bolasie, Baines and Tosun playing regularly to be honest, I don't quite get why we're spending £25m on players who appear to have us just treading water.
Liverpool do not have a creative centre midfield but they do have a very combative one. Although it is the least glamorous part of their team it is hugely effective.
Our midfield battled well to keep them contained and I though did so effectively, in particular Tom Davies.
I think Andre Gomes did work hard but I felt sometimes he wanted too much time on the ball and lost possession. But with games he will improve and most importantly unlike a lot of team this season we were not overrun in any part of the field.
I think our manager and his staff showed their worth in selection and tactics compared to the nightmare at Anfield.

He is completely bottling any sort of physical challenge, in fact he is shamefully moving away from opposition players.
He is so slow and cumbersome even with the ball.
There is no excuses for this. If he faded in the second half I could understand but he doesnt look physically or mentally fit to play this game.

Looks unfit
He's just played against possibly the worst midfield in the league and he can't take control. He's slow, immobile and for a "passer" regularly gives the ball away. He just doesnt affect the game enough. For me, he's not good enough to take us to the next level. A CL midfielder absolutely dominates that game.
