It's hard to imagine him being part of a top quality midfield 2 as for all his talent on the ball, he makes Keane look like prime Bolt. I'm hopeful Ancelotti has a plan for him, but I fear midfields with any kind of legs (such as Liverpool's) will run rings around him regularly unless we partner him with someone with Gana-level legs.

He didn't do enough again yesterday.

Someone with his technical ability should always be an outlet for the ball, but he doesn't drop deep enough.

Still think he is plagued by self-confidence issues, and those are very hard to shake off in elite sport.

He would unboubtedly benefit by having a more athletic box-to-box runner to compliment him in midfield, but I expect him to be a more influential figure on the pitch, and he doesn't seem to have that in him.

I've always had this worry for Gomes.

ANY Everton player would have self confidence issues if they read GOT lol

I think he's going to struggle in this system unless a very competent partner can be found for him. Ideally, someone who covers a lot of ground.

Is he that good that we build the centre midfield around him?
The problem is that he's not brutal/effective enough breaking up play when sitting in front of a back four (when his long range passing is effective), and he's not attacking enough to play him further up the pitch when his long range passing is negated.
He's very effective against teams who use long ball counterattacking football, but not so much against possession-based passing sides.

I think once we get a player nxt to him with some muscle, we will see a better player

Whatever flaws to his game there is: we need players who are as good with the ball as him in terms of retention and passing, esp with limited players like Keane in the team who can't move the ball around with enough pace and precision.

Well, he's here now, and there isn't likely to be enough money to buy four starting midfielders.

Generally, I think he's a talented player, but he really does chew the ball too much in games where his sharpness isn't there, like on Sunday. Arteta was the same for a long time, which is probably way he didn't really come into his own as a centre midfielder until he'd been in the league three or four years.

Also, the lack of joined-up thinking on the recruitment front is hurting the midfielders, as they're playing in a system that none of them are suited to. The current set-up is basically a recipe for beating the dregs of the league at home, while trying not to get battered in any remotely challenging fixture.

We're Everton, all fixtures are challenging fixtures. We have no right to be classing any game as easy, the dregs of the league beat us 2-0 at home.
