I don't think athleticism is necessarily required but we probably need to build the team around him to compensate. Pirlo never had much of it but was always protected by runners. Think he just needs to get through these games, have a rest, pre-season and we'll see him back to his pre-injury form again.

Quite different matches.

That was a good corner and a great header by an Everton player. There was no misfortune involved.

It also came during a period of the game that we dominated and played some good football.

Ffs turning on Gomes I hate you all.

We know this guy has quality, we know he had a horrific injury that he did wonders to return from so quickly, we know we have no other real option but to play him every game in this gruelling schedule.

We all also knew his limitations and why he needs pairing with a more defensive player with legs in the middle of the park but yeh turn on him for playing with Davies and declining Sigurdsson.

He obviously has talent but none of what you have mentioned makes him not able to pass five yards to a blue shirt. His passing is way off at times.

I have not given up on him at all, probably be a much better player with better players around him but at the same time whilst Sigurdsson and Davies (and even Delph who has not even played) are getting slated for bad performances it is only fair that Gomes gets thrown into that mix too as he has been at least equally as bad.

I meant in the macro sense. It’s been three decades of complete and utter rubbish on the whole.

I mean we can blame Gylfi all we like but Gomes has been proper stinky since restart.

Pre-injury as well.

The purple patch when he first joined is a very distant memory. The token gesture he makes to win the ball back is very underwhelming. He may not be a ball winning midfielder but he’s a professional footballer who has looked very off colour for quite a while.

All of this is tempered with the horrific injury he suffered and his previous admissions over the mental anguish he suffered while playing for Barca (being picked on the ‘most disappointing XI’ in La Liga) and hopefully with some time and support her can get back to his best.

I’m not sure how he or Seamus can go in to challenges fully committed after such bad injuries, it must always be in the back of their minds.

Proven over and over to be absolute garbage. If anything, the forum goes into a positivity rebound. Good edgy behaviour though buddy.

How on earth can fans be the target for ire at the moment. Makes absolutely no sense.

You can't defend some of his recent performances, but I am at least comforted by knowing that he is capable of putting in a class performance. Unlike one or two others I could mention.

Needs to improve, a lot.

It's sad really, Gomes was another of the anointed ones, and since he arrived here, has shown he simply doesn't have the all-round game and most particularly, mental strength, to carry that burden of expectation.

Unfortunately I can see a quite rapid fall from grace here unfolding over the next 12 months.

You can make allowances for serious injury, but the harsh truth is the sum-total of his performances pre- and post-injury are much the same - strikingly average.

Another rabbit in the headlight of fan expectation.
