I’m not sure what to make of him, my heart says he’s garbage but my head says hang on a minute.

His goals and assists are poor, but our results since Duncan/Carlo took over would put us 4th I think.
He’s also came back from a long term injury but he was slow anyway.

My heart says he doesn’t stand out enough for the position he plays.
My head says never mind individual performances or what they look like, it’s results you should look at.

Such a strange player. I get him being off the pace slightly given his injury this season, but why does his technique go out the window when he's (oh so frequently) out of form?

If he could still act as a reliable pivot for our centre backs to play to you could almost forgive him being a virtual ghost when the opposition are running at him. When you're as bad as he is out of possession, you've got to be pretty excellent on the ball to make up for it and he is so far away from that now.

First 10 or so games he had for us I thought we had a real star. He was pinging balls all over the place on his second touch with either foot, he was so strong on the ball and bouncing players off him. I know he's had a bad injury but for a long time now he's just looked extremely average.

What a shame.

He’s probably played 1/3 off the games under dunc amd Carlo. So it’s not down to him we are 4th
He weak as a player, he’s weak mentally and can’t even pass forward.
Unfortunately we probably have to watch him for another season.
Roll on when him, siggurdsson, Davies, iwobi, Delph, Bernard. Have gone

Just like so many before him, nothing like the player he was pre-injury and probably never will be. The bravery has gone. Sad.

Doesn't look fit , calm on the ball , but needs better quicker players around him. The lack of movement in the attacking areas doesn't help.
If we had decent cover in midfield , he should be benched.

Unfair. He misplaced 5 passes tonight and made significantly more passes than his midfield partner for most of the match (see attached). 3 of the misplaced 5 came later in the game as he tired. Richarlison also misplaced 5 passes in the game for comparison. Gylfi's pass map is 100% x rated and actually a joke (I can't actually bring myself to post it) . He is the guy we should all be berating, not Gomes.
To be fair mate I don’t think there’s any defending either of them for that performance yesterday. Both played like they couldn’t care less about the club

I don't really buy the argument that the general poor level of the midfield and the team drags him down.

The better players stand out, even in poorer teams, and chip in with goals and assists, as well as from general play.

He was never a goalscorer, so fair enough, but even so he "could" be expected to score 5 or 6 a year at least, with the same in assists.

He is a decent passer, primarily if you like it played sideways and backwards to feet, but I can't recall him playing Richarlison or DCL in very often.

He isn't particularly mobile either, and the injury will probably have given him nagging doubts about going full in the tackle, though he frequently gives free-kicks away in dangerous areas.

He is only partially to blame, but in an embarrassingly poor midfield, for me he doesn't really stand out in any positive way from the others, ergo that makes him just another average player.

I'm afraid he's pulled a Schneiderlin here lads.

Turned up and put in a shift for a couple months made himself look like a Rolls Royce.

Before quickly fading into a crab.

I can't believe that Carlo would do that. Zidane yes , Ronaldo yes , Gomes no.

He's already kinda alluded to having him as the Pirlo type pivot player.

I think if anyone who could make that work would be Carlo.

*This is not me saying Gomes is Pirlo before foaming starts.
