2019/20 Andre Gomes

I think he is just not a premiership player. He doesn’t break up play/tackle, he doesn’t score goals, he doesn’t create chances.
(I’ve just described every one of our CM’s)
He comes across as a sound lad, but ask yourself do you think any of the top ten teams in the prem would take him and the answer for me is no.

This is Andre Gomes in a midfield 2.

Not sure how its 'fitness' or 'injury issue'?

I hope Valencia come in for him.

As I keep saying, hardly any teams play with a 2 in midfield, so it should come as no surprise that the players take time to adapt.

Hes been very poor since the restart, but the willingness from everybody to just give up on him, well it disgusts me.

Even his face looks miserable, I think he knows he's finished, craping out of challenges, losing 50/50s and second to every ball.

We all knew he was mentally weak from is Barca days, so it was clear his mental fragility was never gona allow him to recover from that injury.

I agree, I think it was written all over his face. He's completely lost his confidence.

He didn't even complain when that penalty was given against him.

And when he came off injured, he looked almost relieved like he was glad to be going off.

Our key CM player who directs the flow of the game needs to be a mentally strong, team leader.

I'm not ready to give up on him yet but I think the situation feels much worse because there is no athletic ball-winner next to him at the moment, and he just hasn't got that part of the game in him at all.

But his mental fragility is what worries me the most.

Not physical enough for the PL. Spain suits him better. The refs there do not allow robust tackles, even the gentler ones and pull up players for breathing over someones neck.

The thing with Gomes is, a lot of people saying he doesn’t play well in a 2 man midfield etc.... he was just as bad as this earlier in the season. Do you all remember the Villa away game in particular? That was him playing in 5 man midfield and he was shocking.

Lots of quality in his game but mentality has been an issue - being an elite footballer requires both

At Barça he buckled from the pressure, a move abroad to a club with less pressure theoretically permitted him to thrive. Of course, Everton has been in flux with coaches and tactics. Many adapt but some struggle

We didn’t give up on him. He’s given up on us.

He hasn't become a terrible player overnight. I don't see any reason why he can't do a job for us again next season.

But I think people are rightly a bit shocked at just how timid we've been in midfield. Teams can get outplayed and outclassed but we've literally been scared to tackle or get tight to opponents. So many balls drop in the midfield and our nearest player makes little to no effort to win it. Gomes isn't the only one. All of our midfielders have been shirking responsibility. It's not acceptable.

I don't think so . He seems to love the city and the club . As a lot of people have said , it's seems to be a confidence issue . He most definitely needs a destroyer next to him .
He's a class player , I'm sure it's upsetting him as much as it's upsetting us to have this kind of poor form . He'll come good , class is permanent .

I'm 100% sure he'd be dropped/rested if we had options but we don't hence he's probably the first midfielders name on the team sheet.

He's badly struggling no doubt about it, hopefully will get back to something resembling the player we know he can be next season.
