2019/20 Andre Gomes

No just about every away game. Also look at how many games he starts limping when we are getting beat and ambles off subbed.

I know I am in a tiny minority but I think Gomes is exactly the type of player we dont need.

He has excellent first touch and passing range but his movement is dire, he doesnt track runners, is a liability defensively and often gets injured/seems to fade from games.

If we are trying to break the top 6, then top 4 I dont think the way to do it is try to replicate Lpool/City/Aresenal but with inferior players.

Unless we buy champions league class players who have a strong.winning mentality and have leadership capabilities its almost impossible. Also, against these teams late in cup competitons you need something `different'.

There is an excellent article today about Dyche's massively overachieving Burnley team. They concede fewest goals from turnovers in their third etc etc They get to attack teams with a high press much quicker with long balls that expose lack of numbers at the back.

In other words they think outside of the box to overachieve.

Silva/Brands seem to think we should simply play a high press and try and play silky football to get oursleves to top 6. Its muddled thinking. We need a balance of creativity coupled with a defensive strategy that frustrates `better teams'. We also could do with something a bit unique - like a Duncan. He made a massive difference when fit against the top teams.

For me Gomes is a very poor imitation of anything the top teams have and lacks the power, drive and mental strength to make a big difference in games v them. Also against `weaker' teams they know he is a weak link defensively and will target him similar to Keane.

Not slating him and I agree he is the best `on the ball'.

All I am saying is look deeper.

Dont think `hes a good passer - he must play'. Hes a good dribbler `get him in' Hes strong in the air `get him in'.

Its about a strategy of how your team plays and is setup long term to achieve goals.

I would suggest our best chance of achieving top 6 then top 4 and winning a cup is by having very mobile, athletic, strong engines, defensively sound centre mids who have more creativity than Gueye/Sniddy.

We would beat the `weak' teams and be a hell of a lot more competitive when up against the top 6.

What a plan. Someone get this man FM 20 and a clipboard.

Lol yes, `buy athletic players'. Sometimes football is simple,

So why did 98% of our fans demand and the board spent 25mill + massive wages on a geezer who
couldnt beat the kit men or cleaners at Finch Farm over 30 metres?

Koeman to be fair was trying to move that way but the quality was hopeless and I think he was.

Allaydyce made us much harder to beat and was moving in the right direction. If he had been given backing that summer we would have been way more competitive in the league/cup last season and be a million miles better off this.

But no, bring in a poor mans Klopp/Pep and try to imitate greatness. You end up in an embarassing mess.

Would you say the more athletic, akin to say NFL style athleticism could come in and be naturally more mobile / therefore better?

Rugby players often switch codes / go to NFL etc might be an avenue worth pursuing?
