Would you say the more athletic, akin to say NFL style athleticism could come in and be naturally more mobile / therefore better?

Rugby players often switch codes / go to NFL etc might be an avenue worth pursuing?
Lol yes why not.

I would have Tom Brady (with 2 months training with a football) over Gomes all day long,

I was thinking more winger / striker types - incredible pace and physicality - imagine they’d miss more than they’d score but it only takes 1 goal a game and you’re World Class.

Will give you another example.

Tim Cahill. Very limited player on the ball.

But his attributes incredible drive, massive engine, uniquely good in air for someone not tall, self confidence, inspired others, knew how to notch.

We won/drew so many tricky away games back in the day I would argue alot down to this tremendous player and what he brought. It was something different. Opposition didnt like playing against him.

These are the types of players that will get us top 6 then top 4. They are out there but we just loom for steroetypes.

Lol yes, `buy athletic players'. Sometimes football is simple,

So why did 98% of our fans demand and the board spent 25mill + massive wages on a geezer who
couldnt beat the kit men or cleaners at Finch Farm over 30 metres?
Because when put in a role where he can actually play expansive football he’s quite decent? If he goes further than the centre circle this year he gets a frowny face sticker from Silva.

Prime era Tim Cahill wouldn’t be effective in this Silva team. He probably wouldn’t make the bench.

Pace needs to be paramount. Any scouting work done needs to have that column highlighted.

There is an excellent article today about Dyche's massively overachieving Burnley team. They concede fewest goals from turnovers in their third etc etc They get to attack teams with a high press much quicker with long balls that expose lack of numbers at the back.

This is not a very unique style, or thinking outside the box. Instead, there is a copy of the Egil Drillo Olsen system, which was again inspired by English coaches who came to Scandinavia in the 70-80s. His main principles were zone play, winning the ball in favorable positions and ending the attacks quickly (the ball should go fast forward = pass sequences equal or less then 3). When the opponent was in good balance Drillo favored long balls up to a big target man which lay wide in the field (Flo), and moved up many men around the second ball. This was partly due to the thesis that the closer you are to the goal the easier it is to score, but was mainly due to the fact that Drillo wouldent risk being caught in imbalance near his own goal. He also had a great focus on set pieces.

He tried these principles in Wimbledon, but this was a rather unprofessional bunch of players. It must be said that he has not succeeded as well with club teams as he did with the national team.

The best time to play a system like this is when nobody else does?

Loads of teams played more long ball, cautious tactics back in the day so wouldnt be as effective.

Teams were used to it,

Now everyone wasnts to pass the ball sideways for 80 minutes a game and keep possession I would suggest trying a completely different strategy is the way to go, especially when in our position.

Yes, thats called when you 2-0 up v Bournemouth at home and they have given up.

The crowd puurr at Gomes 40 yard balls and tell their mate next to him how great he is.

How about when you are 1-0 down at Anfield or Arsenal. Where does our hero do then?

Ps. Anyone remember 1995.

Bunch of dogs in centre mid Parkinson/Horne/Ebbrell. They were limited but had something about them, heart, desire.
The top teams didnt like playing against them.

We had leaders at the back Southall/Watson and a menace up front Ferguson.

Ohh, guess what we won the cup and beat the champions in the final.

We beat the runners up in the final, we didn’t beat the champions until the curtain raiser the following August

Ah, I see you've answered the question about something that's actual real (that our midfielders seem to be told to play no further than the edge of the centre circle, unless assisting with creating overlaps wide) with some wonderful hypothetical situations. Albeit, ones that actually seem to ignore situations that have already happened.

Well played.
