I get that he has a contract and all but I genuinely am baffled when players just refuse to move on to a different club on lower wages to play. I get it, it's a business and all that. But, let's say Gomes is making 6m a year or so. He's been here 3 years? 4 years? And he was at Barca before, it's not like he's EVER going to be hard up for cash even if he doesn't work another day in his life. Move on, play some more footy, enjoy life. It's why I think Klassen wasn't an awful buy, he realized he wasn't going to play and moved on. He didn't stick around like just so many of our other players.

There comes a tipping point with contracts mate, were the player has to make a decision, they either stay here and see their profile decline and pick up the money or move on and back themselves. Financially, as well it may make sense, for example he may make 12 mill here over a couple of years, but if Benfica offered him a five year deal worth 20 mill over the next five years it may make more sense from a security point of view, which would take him to 33 (34), hes more likely to get a better wage now at 28 - hes 29 in July, then 30 (31) when his contract is up. Then you are looking at lifestyle decisions moving back to Portugal etc. Schneiderlin is an example of the point im making.

Yeah, I'm still a bit blattered from last night but that's kind of what I meant. Sandro, he knew he would NEVER make that money elsewhere so he stuck around. I get it. But Gomes isn't bad, at all. He's just not suited to the Premier League at all. Especially after that injury.

Haha me too.

Hes not as bad as people make out mate agreed, though when hes of it hes really off it and he creates to much work for others, i think you also need an enforcer or water carrier in beside like Gana - that was his best season.

Hes defo not worth nearly 11mill a year in costs to us though, so we should move him on if we can.

If he’s after £20m over the next 5 years (£4m per year) and he decides to make £12m of it warming our bench and boiling our urine, then he “only” needs to make £8m over the remaining 3 years (£2.67m per year) which I’m sure he could still likely squeeze out of one of the Portuguese lot at 30.

What I’m trying to say, is: don’t get your hopes up that we’re getting rid of this absolute no-mark before his juicy contract is up.

Reductions in earnings doesn’t go down well with spouses who have ‘mentally’ spent all future earnings

Yep fair points mate, hes on a career contract here, a lot of it subjective analysis and your opinion is fair and maybe on point, a lot of it comes down to unknowns, whats on the table (if anything), the lad himself, finances, lifestyle decsions etc etc.

There’s only a small cluster of teams outside of the Premier League who can pay his wages though

Obligatory daily reminder that he’s played in La Liga, for the best team in it, before his leg break, and was so bad he got hounded out.
