Gomes was a disastrous failure at Barcelona, suffering from an apparent nervous breakdown in full public view. That's not his fault. He just doesn't possess the mental wherewithal to become a decisive player for Everton, as his overall form at the club has by now conclusively proved. I agree with you, though: it IS up to the manager to unlock that talent or quickly rid himself of the player. His alacrity at dismissing James suggests he backs himself to maximise what he has with Gomes - or he's a deluded old fool. He'll be judged on the outcome because plenty are of the opinion no more time is needed to work out what Gomes can bring.

That’s half the problem with the depth of the squad-it’s not the numbers , it’s the players like this.

It’s manageable to not have the best squad depth if you players like Townsend who turns up fit every week…having three players like this is a huge issue.

I agree and it runs counter to the logic provided for forcing James out the club. Should have taken the exact same approach with these three and saved ourselves a fortune in wages. All three need told in no uncertain terms they have no future here and need to find new clubs asap. A squad as small as ours can’t have three players as injury prone as this and when they are fit don’t add any value.

Which just causes problems down the road when Docuoure and Allan break down because not one of these clowns can even get onto the pitch for any meaningful run of games without either looking like a cereal box competition winner or breaking down injuries immediately.

Watching clips of him at Valencia is so bizarre, clearly a player in there- such a shame it hasn’t shown up much at Everton. Lots of complicating factors with his situation at Barcelona and the injury, of course.
