Just watched the more extended highlights from last night and everything and their is a sequence of play between him and Gray that for me encapsulates all the things wrong with Gomes, he makes a great pass to gray, almost stops to sit back and marvel in his own ability, Gray gets a shot off, but if Gomes had followed and run into space he could have received a pass and have a perfect angel to smash it into the net....

Now that Benitez has put a stop to sideways and backwards football, this may be the end for him, or could it actually be the making of him.

Gomes may benefit from the new style of play, in particular having some more mobile forwards and wingers ahead of him.

I don't think we should underestimate just how stifling the style of play was. Slow passing rather than fast attacking. Gomes will look better when he is able to find our re-energized forward line.

Gomes has some great long passing in his locker. This change could really suit him.

On his loan season, he was the best midfielder we have had since peak-Arteta. No point selling for £5m or something because there is a player in there somewhere.
