2021/22 Andre Gomes

I have no doubt he could be a gem of a player in a league where he has time to sort his feet out and pick his passes, unfortunately the Premier League is not that place. He needs to go back to Portugal or find another league where he can be central and his lack of speed doesn’t catch him out. The Premier League is a league where speed of thought and or speed of movement is key to success, you need one or both, unfortunately Gomez does not have either to the required standard. He does seem a descent sort and deserves credit for battling back from a terrible injury but unfortunately that credit doesn’t extend to a free ride, Everton need to become more hard edged and ship him out, they would be doing him a favour in the long run as he may well get more game time and hopefully a place in the sun.

We seem to have always carried players who are just not at the pace of the league Alcaraz Barry (after his first season) Siggurdson Williams Davies Gomes Bernard Tosun Keane Klaasen

Just all far too slow for premier league football and not good enough to make up for it like James was at times.
Gareth Barry???? Wash your mouth out pal. Too slow for the Premier league????

This - but on his wages...

This - but on his wages...
I know Gomez’ wage is a big stumbling block in our way to off loading him. No one is going to give him the same money as we are currently paying him. He will still command a high wage no matter where he ships up. Personally I think I would be prepared to take a cut in wages as this is only for the term of my current contract and go somewhere where I can play my part and feel wanted. The killer is the signing on fee, it is in the player’s interest to run down his contract and then demand a big sign on fee in lieu of the transfer fee.
I understand the need to protect the player and this need need is met through their contract, I understand that not everyone plays Premier League and earns significant sums of money. Surely it is not beyond the powers that be to come up with a more equitable system whereby a club can be protected from players who wish to manipulate the system purely for personal gain. These players are extremely costly assets and their worth both to themselves and the clubs needs to be recognised and protected. Your prime asset cannot be allowed to become your heaviest millstone because he gets the hump about something or other.
I know there is a solution in not buying the type of prima donnas who end up holding clubs to ransom but it would appear that as agents make colossal sums of money out of players there are always ulterior motives at play.
Perhaps I am just old fashioned and hanker back to the days when players wanted to play and to play well for the club they were with.
I remember playing for an amateur club and the manager holding up a shirt in the changing room and talking about what an honour it was to be allowed to wear the shirt and about the players who had went before us. We believed we were standing on the shoulders of giants and played according.

Shorter contracts.

That world is gone.

Gomes negotiated a salary leaving one of the big glamour clubs, a teammate of Messi, and all associated with it.

If he is willing to go out on loan, then I'll salute him for wanting to play.

In an ideal world, somone in his position would take a pay cut to ensure regular playing time, you might argue he is already a wealthy individual etc, but it isn't going to work out like that.

I'm sure there would be takers for him on a modest transfer fee if that was the case, but it's the club that gave him the contract.

The only thing most of them stand on is the right to sometimes take money under false pretenses...maybe thinking - its the contract, like its the end of Chinatown or something

That said somebody at the Club pushed the piece of paper across the figurative table with the amount of the soft money written on it.

The issue there is that players you want to keep can leave earlier. Richarlison would have walked away for free for sure. The key is to buy good players and pay them accordingly. Something we're not particularly good at
Absolutely. But as you point out, we have been poor at identifying the good players. That’s the crux.
