It is often a matter of having some good experiences. The problem is often that when you get to this level you often become very careful, and think more about not making mistakes, than daring to create problems for the opponent. Then you rarely get any really good experiences.
So for young players, it's often about how tough they are mentally. When talent scouts look at young players, they often look at their reaction after they have made a mistake, and how it affects them for the rest of the match.
I feel like maybe Gordon spends too much energy on avoiding making mistakes, rather than doing what he's really good at.
